An Introduction to Bulgaria

Bulgaria has existed for more than 13 centuries in Europe linking the East and West. It is situated in south eastern Europe and occupies the north eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It is surrounded by Romania to the north, Serbia to the northwest, Greece to the south, the Republic of Macedonia to the southwest and Turkey to the southeast. Bulgaria has been through major changes recently and is one of the EU’s newest members, joining in January 2007. Many of the country’s resorts and cities have undergone construction booms tempting buyers from Western Europe resulting in many ski and beach resorts expanding quickly. The main cities have become vibrant and attractive with varied shopping and lively nightlife.

Half of the country’s territory is covered in spectacular mountains together with 370km of golden beaches along the Black Sea enticing tourists from around the world. Bulgarians are very proud of the rich folklore traditions of the country and visitors can stay in towns and villages that have aimed to preserve the authentic Bulgarian hospitality and spirit. Folk dances, national costumes and dances play an important part in the typical life of Bulgarians.

The country has had a turbulent history and has experienced radical political changes recently. Bulgaria chose its first democratically elected president in 1990 after being a satellite of the Soviet Union for nearly half a century. In 1991 a constitution was adopted leading to the restoration of political parties and privatisation and restitution of the land. These changes subsequently led to Bulgaria joining the European Union in 2007.

Bulgaria’s main lure for tourists is its stunning beaches and picturesque bays however there are also networks of hiking trails and horse riding routes allowing you to discover the country’s lush mountains and forested landscapes especially around the Rila and Pirin Mountains. The cities too have much to offer with the cosmopolitan Sofia with its lovely parks and fascinating museums, and Plovdiv with its Roman ruins and National Revival architectural treasures and Varna with its youthful maritime energy.
