An Introduction to Cambodia

Cambodia is a charming yet mystifying South East Asian nation which is bordered by Vietnam to the east, Laos to the north and Thailand to the west. It is rich in culture and history, both modern and ancient.

Cambodia has had to fight for its independence for the last 500 years or so. It has had to conquer threats of takeover from its neighbours and in addition to this, colonial France. It had a taste of independence from 1953, however suffered horrific civil war under the reign of the Khmer Rouge from 1970. This was a period of fierce brutality which ended in 1993 with UN-sponsored elections disarming the Khmer Rouge and returning the country to independence.

Cambodia is becoming increasingly popular as tourists are drawn to it's incredible temples and beautiful beaches. With much of the population living on as little as US$1 a day, it is a great value travel destination. Its political history is dark but fascinating and its culture rich. Its main tourist attractions are its chaotic, colourful capital Phnom Penh; increasingly popular beach destination Sihanoukville; but most importantly Siem Reap and its incredible temples, Angkor Wat, being the most spectacular temple harnessing spirituality and history.
