An Introduction to Malaysia

Malaysia comes in two parts – one on a peninsula of the Asian mainland and and one 640 miles away across the South China Sea on the northern third of the island of Borneo.

West (peninsular) Malaysia shares a border with Thailand, is connected by a causeway and a bridge (the 'second link') to the island state of Singapore. East Malaysia (Borneo) shares borders with Brunei and Indonesia.

Malaysia is one of the main tourist and backpacker destinations in south-east Asia.

It has brilliant beaches, unspoilt rainforests, loads of wildlife – and also bustling cities and dozens of cultural attractions.

It's a melting pot of a place, with indigenous Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences mixed together in a country that is part shiny industrial modernity and part developing nation. With its investment in the high technology industries and moderate oil wealth, it has become one of the richest nations in south-east Asia – but there are still parts where subsistence farming is the norm.

Malaysia is a great place to travel. It's got all the amenities you could want, and most things work. But it's still a lot cheaper than Singapore and there's enough fascinating traditional culture and wilderness left to keep anyone happy.
