The Amtrak Northeast Rail Pass is ideal for the more specialised trip allowing you to really uncover what makes this region tick. What you get

What you don’t get

• Upgrades and sleeping accommodation will be charged extra.
• In addition to a rail pass you will need a reservation for each train you travel on.
• Amtrak passes are not valid on the Auto Train, Acela Express, certain Thruway connections and the Canadian portion of trains operated jointly by Amtrak and Via Rail.
• Services to Toronto from the US - these trains are operated by VIA.

How it works

Passes are valid for 15 consecutive days of travel. Amtrak rail passes are advanced paid and issued at the train station on the day of departure. A reservation will be confirmed and an itinerary emailed which will provide confirmation of the rail pass reservation and payment. Upon arrival in the USA travelers must visit a ticket clerk in the station who will issue the rail pass. (Rail Passes are NOT available through ticketing machines) You must have a reservation for each journey being issued with your rail pass, it is recommended that reservations be made as far in advance as possible, and before arrival in the US, but they can be reserved at the train station subject to availability. Reservations can be made free of charge through International Rail when booking your pass or by contacting Amtrak on 1-800-872-7245. Upgrades and sleeping accommodation will be charged extra.

Cancellations and refunds

Amtrak Rail passes which are lost, stolen or validated/exchanged cannot be refunded. Refunds are only accepted on vouchers returned to International Rail before the start of their validity. Vouchers returned for cancellation or alterations have a standard 15% cancellation/exchange fee in addition to an administrative charge per ticket. Cancellation/alteration fees will be charged on each voucher returned. Duplicate or replacement passes cannot be issued under any circumstances. Reservations, upgrades and sleeping accommodation are non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
