This placement would suit... Someone who loves working with children and wants to experience the real India. It’s one of our most demanding placements, but also extremely rewarding. Changing Worlds offers a range of voluntary placements in urban and rural settings in southern India. Many of our volunteers choose to help in orphanages or with social programmes.India is one of the most fascinating and beautiful countries you can visit during your gap year. Its vibrant scenery and culture are legendary, but so is its poverty. This is your opportunity to experience both sides of India - and to help. Life in India is tough and these placements can be challenging. But they are also extremely rewarding. And, of course, you'll have the support of Changing Worlds' local representative. Changing Worlds placements in orphanages are extremely popular and demand for placements is high. We are happy to be associated with some excellent orphanages and children's homes around the World. Each set of circumstances for the children is unique. Some are orphaned by the death of their parents, some have been thrown out by their parents because they are handicapped or, as in India, they are female! Some have experienced tragic events like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Others are discriminated against by the political regime in which they find themselves - like the hill tribe children from Burma who have fled to Thailand. Others are the result of a fast changing political system where the poor and vulnerable are left to fend for themselves like children and young adults in Latvia. We look for volunteers who love children. We look for volunteers who can cope with stress of working long hours with limited resources. We look for volunteers who will be prepared to live in basic living conditions. We can offer you work with babies, work with toddlers, work with handicapped children and work with young adults - you can choose and will try to match your wants with the needs of the institution. Our criteria is more determined by their needs than by your wants and we will we do want we can to match these up as well as we can. If you can be flexible this tells us a lot about you! If you fit this description then this type of placement may be for you.
"As an ‘Uncle’ I found myself teaching English and Maths lessons, playing endless games of cricket and football, cleaning 60 children’s teeth in an evening, learning how to make friendship bracelets, and even patching the kids up with some first aid. India is a place to get annoyed at a country for its many quirks, only to fall in love with it anyway, to meet and bond with children who you’ll never forget, and to enjoy the freedom of leaving everything you know and living in a completely different culture." Phil Davies, India 2007
