This placement would suit... people with an interest in Indian culture and a desire to learn through supporting underprivileged children.![]() Our care placements are based in the far South of India, in the dry and dusty Tamil Nadu and in the lush green Kerala. The two regions are separated by the Western Ghat mountains, home to numerous birds, mammals and local tea and cardamom growers. Projects Abroad send volunteers to a number of orphanages in these two areas. Here they work with children between the ages of two and 18, helping them learn life-skills that are ordinarily taught by parents. By getting involved in the day-to-day running of a care centre - making sure children are fed, washed and dressed, and paying them personal attention - volunteers help to shape the lives of young people, preparing them for life. Volunteers with previous experience often work with mentally challenged, deaf or dumb children.
Volunteers don't need to be qualified or have previous experience - enthusiasm, a willingness to get involved and patience are the vital ingredients. Let us know if you'd like to work with children or on a practical placement. You could even do a bit of both! Accommodation in India is with local host families who are picked for their warn hospitality as well as their interest in meeting new people. As well as providing support and advice, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a fantastic insight into Indian cuisine! Our users say..."The most wonderful thing about my placement was the chance to see the development and progress made by the physically disabled children at the hospital. Just by holding them and talking to them, the enjoyment was so clear in their faces" - Charlotte Harris
