This placement would suit... caring, creative, energetic volunteers who want to make a difference.![]() Projects Abroad have links with a number of orphanages in and around Kathmandu, which aim to improve the lives of some of the 5,000 street children which Nepal is home to. Volunteers are extremely valuable to their host community, and their help is always greatly appreciated Most volunteers work in orphanages where they get especially involved in sports such as football and basketball, as well as helping with English classes and generally looking after the children. As well as orphanages, the help of volunteers is also appreciated in rehabilitation centres for disabled or malnourished children. An important focus of our care placements is to teach those life skills that parents or guardians would normally impart, especially when working with young children. However, volunteers can also assist with school lessons if they wish and some orphanages positively encourage this. You can mix songs and games into your teaching and care work, and there are often opportunities to help with art, drama, sport (including football) and music. Care work can be challenging, but it is also fun and enjoyable, and greatly appreciated by the children and staff. Probably the greatest value of a volunteer is to bring some fun into the lives of these children, many of whom are from difficult backgrounds. Simply by being there, playing games, showing affection and providing some much needed love and attention you will be making an important contribution. All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement, and also have the backup of our staff in the local office in Kathmandu and the UK. Accommodation is with a local ‘host’ family; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Nepalese family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Nepalese delights! Nepal offer volunteers a truly astounding experience - the Projects Abroad office is based in the bustling capital city of Kathmandu where jostling crowds, rickety bullock carts and noisy auto-rickshaws all make a contribution to the character and constant energy of its traditional narrow streets. The countryside is superb for trekking and climbing, or white-water rafting. Visit the Himalayas (you can't miss them!), travel to India or take a tour to Tibet. The travelling opportunities are wide-ranging, and the views are stunning! Our users say..."The overall experience was most fulfilling. I would definitely recommend this to others who are thinking of working abroad. It was a rare and wonderful opportunity to help a community in need. The work was very rewarding and I was overwhelmed by the enormous effort that was made by the locals to welcome me into the care home" - Heena Gudka
