This placement would suit... Those keen to work in social care Volunteers are needed at Buotuna Home for elderly, disabled women and a nearby children’s orphanage in Unawatuna.Unawatuna, set in a perfect sandy bay has been a sleepy fishing village for many years. Its relaxed pace of life and tranquil beauty made it the perfect destination for young travellers. They are attracted to the chilled-out lifestyle and the climate. It is now something of a haven for young people and there are a number of small restaurants, bars and backpacker–style guesthouses. Buotona residential home houses 102 elderly people, 30 disabled young women and 15 children. There are four female nurses, a doctor and two assistants. The residents are reasonably well cared for but would benefit enormously from volunteer input. Volunteer responsibilities You would be asked to put on activities for the residents. The nature of the activities would depend who you were working with. The children are accommodated separately from the main centre in a traditional village a few miles from Unawatuna. The exact way that you divide your time would be up to you and your role would depend upon your skills and interests. It might include teaching English, art, badminton and indoor games. Both the children and the elderly need care, love, domestic support, attention and the time that full time members of staff do not normally have to give. Obviously your interaction with the disabled women will be different to that with the elderly or the children. Accommodation / time off / working hours In addition to this project, Outreach International have a dance/art project and teaching projects in Unawatuna. You would therefore normally live with other volunteers in a house, which is a close walk to the ocean. You would be given an allowance for food. The staple diet is fish, prawns, rice and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. Pineapples, mangoes, guavas, papaya, avocadoes, limes and tomatoes area all grown locally. The working day is normally 8:30am - 5pm with a break for lunch. The centre is open at weekends but you would have these free to explore the wonderful coastline and other parts of Sri Lanka. There is a huge amount to do but not much initial guidance to get activities started. Mr Sarath Dias is the charismatic Director and speaks fluent English.
