This placement would suit... enthusiastic volunteers who want to do something worthwhile. The Changing Worlds Argentinean orphanage placements are in and around the city of Mendoza.

As a Changing Worlds volunteer you work as a teaching assistant in a kindergarten with disadvantaged and poorer children, many of whom are orphans. You need to enjoy working with children, be flexible and able to work as part of a team. Teaching materials are limited so applicants need to be creative. Take lots of ideas and resources with you. If you enjoy music, drama, art or sport (and simply having fun with kids!) then you will thoroughly enjoy your experiences and make you feel you are giving something to others who desperately need it.

There are opportunities to work with extended families in the community as well. Poorer families do need support and the orphanage pays an important role in this respect guiding and aiding where appropriate.

Where will I live ?
Changing Worlds rents a furnished apartment close to the centre of Mendoza. Whilst the accommodation is basic, it is comfortable and will meet all your needs. You will have access to toilet and shower facilities. The electricity and water services are generally reliable in this part of the city. You can expect to share a room with another Changing Worlds participant.

You will need to purchase food for yourself. There is a small kitchen in the apartment should you wish to cook for yourself and your new found friends!

What support will I get ?
You will be briefed before you depart on sensitive issues of culture, safety and health. On arrival at Mendoza, Jose Mostafá, the Changing Worlds representative will welcome you. You will enjoy a few days relaxing before the programme formally begins.

Jose has designed a ten-day programme to introduce you to Argentinean Spanish. The course will give you a greater understanding of the subtle differences between the Spanish you learned in the UK and that spoken by the locals. The course is designed to help you to understand the theory but, more importantly, to give you a chance to apply what you have learned to the real world. It is fun and incorporates lots of activities including visits and excursions around the city and the local region.

Jose will provide you with ongoing support throughout your stay in Mendoza. He understands the challenges of living and working overseas and possesses excellent communication skills.

Changing Worlds
What do I need ?
Insurance (covering your placement time and any planned independent travel). Extra food and living costs (about £25 per week).

Am I eligible ?
If you want to gain the most out of your placement in Mendoza it is important that you are a confident speaker of Spanish before you leave the UK. We require that all applicants should have a minimum of Advanced level Spanish, however if applicants can demonstrate that they are keen and willing to learn more then we would be happy to consider them.

What can I do in my spare time ?
Argentina offers loads of wonderful experiences! You need not leave the city to enjoy a great social life. There are many bars, restaurants and night clubs to explore and make new friends.

Mendoza is known internationally for its excellent wineries so why not take a tour...its great fun!

Further a field you are on the gateway to the Argentinian Andes cordillera so if you enjoy the great outdoors you will not be disappointed. You can go kayaking, mountain biking, climbing, trekking and camping during your weekends away - its all very cheap and accessible. Jose, our representative, will point you in the right direction.

Santiago in Chile is a bus ride of around 8 hours away whilst the capital Buenos Aires is 12 hours (overnight) away.

The road infrastructure in Argentina is very good so it is possible to travel in all directions from Mendoza.
