fraser island adventures- I managed to survive the wild dingos and man eating tiger sharks on fraser! Had a really good time, fraser is basically an island made of sand with the most amazing fresh water lakes on it! We got our hands on a 4x4 and raced around the island. It was so much fun going up and done the beach trying our hardest not to spin the car over by going through washouts too fast!!! we camped on the beach so we had to be on constant look out for wild dingos, didnt have any attacks i think katies singing must have scared them away. But we did see a few. I think they are too cut to harm anyone! Made going to the loo in the middle of the night a scarey adventure everytime though. Half expected one of the girls to come screaming back with a snake bitting their bum. Camping was fun we had some very trendy heavey army style tents luckily it didnt rain as they all had holes! I am now also an expert at setting up camp fires and even more of an expert at toasting marshmellows over it. my cris y brown marshmellows were definatley the best( he he)
We visited all the major points on the island, Indian head one of the only pieces of rock on the island. After climbing up this you could see the most amazing views of the coral and the island which mostly looked like a huge desert. The best bit was I got to do a bit of free whale watching as we could see whales jumping about in the distance. We also dragged ourselves to the Champaign pools the only place on the island were it is safe to swim in the sea water ( thanks to the sharks) Its like a big rock pool where the waves come crashing over into it so it lookes like bubbling froth ( That must be why they call it that!)
One of my favourites was Lake Wabby, a huge fresh water lake with the high light being the huge sand dune that runs into it. After a nakering climb to the top you run down so fast that you eventually end up on your bum rolling down until you roll into the water. I managed to spend a good few hours practicing my ‘Bond ’ rolls here! Managed to convince katie into doing sand angels at the top of the dune, for those who dont know what that is I wont try to explain but it basically consists of lying full down in the sand and waving your arms and legs up and down and looking very silly ( honestly it is alot of fun!!!)
Then there was Lake Mekenzie, a huge fresh water lake with Aqua blue water and very fine white sand ( this is where you can clean all your silver, as the sand is so fine…..but beware it also ruins any electrical equipment you might own!) Katie and I swam across to the island right on the other side of the lake was so pretty. I was luck not to return to Hervey bay looking like a red beetroot as you cant wear sunscream when your swimming in these lakes as they are fresh water, but I survived.
On our last day I dragged myself out of bed on my own ( very proud ) to watch the sunrise over the sea, sat on the beach wrapped in my (hired) sleeping bag with no other form of life to be seen apart from the odd dingo but I sat very still and pretended to be a rock! So gorgeous! Best sunset I think Ive seen in all of my travels so far!
Fraser Island was amazing and Im sure we will both be finding sand in all sorts of places for months to come, but i was looking forward to my shower when I got back to the hostel….......ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh it was cold!!!!!!!!!!!
