is that tom griffiths’ book still worth reading if i’m all booked up and ready to go, or is it just for people that need to be pushed on their way like?
I’m reading Shantaram at the moment, makes my smile loads thinking i’m gonna be in there in just under 3 weeks.

Shantaram is brilliant, although a bit homoerotic at points. Wish they would hurry up with the movie but it keeps getting delayed. Although it will be pretty hard to do it justice on screen. Johnny Depp as Shantaram is really bad casting, which doesn’t bode well for the outcome of the film.
“Are you experienced?” by William Sutcliffe. First read it about 9 years ago now, and had this urge to travel ever since.
As for the Top gear special, that cemented South East Asia as my next long term destination :)
Urge to travel? i got the impression he didn’t like travelling much and went just to get into a girl! good book tho :)
I think the point of the book was that he went to get his jam roll but in the end he took more from the experience of travelling than the bird who “found ” herself. I think it’s a great account of a teenagers experience of India, who just went to have a bit of an adventure and get drunk.
When they couldn’t care less about the mysticism of the country and yoga and all that nonsense. He also summed up your average backpacker in India really well with the conclusion and how they think they are above those who haven’t been to India. When in actual fact all they do is act like a hippie for a few months then go home and act the same way they did before they left.
It was good to read a no nonsense book about India, compared to most others that are like reading 500 page poems about hugging lepers.
Oh YAY I actually think Shantaram is the best book I’ve ever read - picked up a copy in a second-hand book shop in Goa and then read it - mostly set in Mumbai. It was cool having been to Mumbai and knowing the street names and stuff while you read it. Also the fact that it’s a true story is crazy but cool.
Also yes I am so with people in the Top Gear specials, all of them. Apart form driving to the north pole - prob don’t fancy that one so much.
The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost. I just read it a few months ago and now I want to go (almost) everywhere she wrote about.
