Humanitarian work wanted

Hi all,

I have been looking for a long term free project doing some humanitarian work. Ideally I would love to work with kids but am happy to try my hand at anything. I want to do something for at least a year in Africa (i think) but any ideas would really help.

Anyone know of any projects which could help?

Thanks

If you’re looking for volunteering placements there are lots out there to choose from, but you have to pay for the privilege.

However, if you are looking for actual humanitarian work, from my research, you have to have experience working for a humanitarian organisation or have a degree in something similar before they will consider taking you on.

Try idealist.org they have jobs/internships, mostly in the US working with charities such as amnesty. They are very tough to get but they are free, but then again you would be working probably in a US city and that will be expensive.
They have a few programs in other countries, especially central and southern america

You’ll have to pay for most projects you work on, but that covers the costs of your accommodation, meals, transport etc which means you’re not a burden on the project you’re trying to help.
Try http://www.africanimpact.com/volunteers/hiv-aids-volunteer-south-africa/ for a worthwhile project to do.

Remember, with anything that’s free or doesn’t cost a lot: how are they paying for you to be there? Accommodation, food, working permits, support, supervisors, etc don’t come for free.

Would it be better for the local economy to employ or allow to volunteer a LOCAL person? Are you taking something away that someone local could do and gain skills from? And are you draining more money from the country in the form of free access to the place than you’re actually helping?

These are the worries I have when it comes to volunteering abroad… don’t do it to inflate your ego, do it because it’s 100% necessary and worthwhile (and don’t let the tour operator be the judge of that!!!!)

Could not agree with the above post more, you are so right. I wanted to volunteer but realistically didnt know what use i could be, so i think i’d only volunteer abroad if i had a skill to offer OR it was something i was offered while away because they wanted my help after meeting me.
It’s also a catch 22- i’m trying to find out more about palm oil deforestation, most of us happily consume it on a daily basis but then want to go help the poor orangutans due to our consumption…it just seems wrong, i dont know maybe thats just me.

Heya, Our projects are a lot cheaper than most as we don’t aim to make money out of the business, just cover our admin costs and then the rest of the money will go into your placement (food accom etc) and to the community you will be helping. If you are interested check out www.volunteervacations.co.uk and feel free to message me!
