I’m 27, my first RTW was at 24 (and a bit of partying around Europe before uni). I loved it, but I have found that since that first trip I have become far more confident and secure in myself which means I can truly appreciate all the opportunities available when travelling and at home. Being young is great but when it comes to travelling, age knows no boundaries.
I am 24 now. Went to Australia for a year at the age of 21. What I should have done is come home for a few months then gone back out but I didn’t as I didn’t feel the need. Been back nearly two years now (!) and wanting to go away again. Am going to do a ski season next year. I would go this year but am tied into this contract where I have just moved to.
I want to go to NZ at some point, a year if I like it, but I said to myself in Australia that the next trip I do won’t be by myself. As much as I loved the freedom, I was jealous of those travelling with someone.
I turned 25 a month into my RTW trip.
I’m 27 in July this year, and still have plenty of travel plans ahead of me. I’d echo one of the comments above, I think age is completely subjective. Ultimately you can only travel depending on your own situation, and essentially what you want from life in the future.
Alternatively, you could always just live for now… :)
I’ve just turned 24.. and I went through this just before departing… “Am I too old” “Everyones going to be young..” etc.
BUT..
a) Well I’m not getting any younger.. so there’s no time like the present.
b) I’ve actually been really surprised in the hostels I’ve been to there seems to be quite a balance of 18 year olds.. and people a bit older (not counting Calgary where majority of people were over 60.. from the oil rigs). Had a good banter with a bunch of people in a hostel in the weekend and turned out I was the youngest at the table.. at 24 I didn’t think that would happen!
and c) I want to keep travelling.. forever!!! Now that I’m out.. age doesn’t concern me at all..
I guess I did have a couple of days when thinking about returning to uni (was thinking about studying medicine for a while..and that did freak me out a bit as I would be so much older when at uni.. but that idea has passed!)
Basically.. your options are.. travel now at 25… put it off.. then do it when you’re older than that… or not go based on a silly number because you’re fretting about what society dictates you “should be doing” at a particular age and potentially really regret it forever.
It so SO NOT TOO OLD TO TRAVEL!!! I had family and friends who did massive world travels in their 30s!!!!
Don’t for a second think that you’re too old to do ANYTHING!
Of course, if you decide to do those ‘contiki’ tours, you may feel a bit old (I know from experience and I was only 23) so better if you don’t go on these mad bus tours unless you want to drink and party the whole time…which, lets face it, you could do at home.
When you say the word ‘Travel’ many people only think of full moon parties in Thailand or binging it up and down the Australian coast.
Okay a big sweeping generalization but after doing those two things, I can honestly say that the average age was 18.
Everywhere else in the world? Into the twenties.
No. You’re not too old to travel.
Travelling isn’t like gymnastics; you don’t have to retire at 23.
At least, I hope not, as I am a little over 25…

Nice analogy!
