Cheers

No questions, no plans to visit Australia (although SA is looking interesting…), but…

classic writing, Tezza :D :D :D Keep it up! I especially loved the GP and Neighbours reports

Hi Terry,

Sounds like your having a fab time and doing a similar route as I was planning to do.

So did you book these trips and hostels your staying at in advance or when you got out there?

Hi James,

Pleased to read you are enjoying reading my diary, just a quick one for now as I’m in a internet cafe in Alice Springs and got to be at a group meal soon.

I didn’t book my hostels in advance.  Only my first hostel (in my case, in Cape Town) so i knew I had a place to stay. I haven’t really needed to book hostels in advance while on the road either. Mostly been able to get in to the hostels quite easily.  Just watch out for busy periods - I booked my hostel in Melbourne in Advance as it was F1 weekend and I knew it would be full (which it was when I was staying there).  Another example is, I’ll be in San Fran for the 4th July - I’ll have to book in advance for that too. Just keep an eye on public holidays and events.

Trips - the only ‘trip’ I booked while back in the UK was the Baz Bus (backpacker transport in South Africa).  I wish I would have bought my Oz Experience ticket back home, you pay a lot more for it out here. It terms of other trips - e.g - Cape Trib, White Water Rafting etc - wait til you get over here, there are tons of places you can book your trips.

Any other questions, feel free to ask, I am off for 6 days now in the outback so prob won’t get another reply for a while.

Hope that helps

Terry :D

Hey Terry,

Just thought you might be interested in this. But you probably noticed it on the home page when you first came onto the site so really it was a waste of time posting this here. Nevermind. I had fun. Off I go, back to work…

Hi Terry,

How did you find the Oz Experience bus? I’m not sure whether to go with that or the greyhound bus, being 24 I might be a bit old for the “Big green shag bus”!!

Hi God,

Oz Experience for me was fine, nothing like what I had heard about it, maybe I was lucky though as most of the people on the bus were around my age (23), very few 18-19yr olds for some reason.

It does have its advantages and disadvantages, as everything does, but for me travelling alone and wanting to meet people - it was a great decision to do Oz experience.  Yes, there are sometimes when you are encouraged to have fun, but if you don’t want to join in, then you don’t have to.  I met SO MANY people on the bus, and also going to places that you’ll never normally go to, like ‘Dingo’ was superb - a night I’ll never forget!

I am on the Kiwi bus now, THIS is full of 18-19 yr olds and they seem to party every night, but still, glad I have done it.  If you are going to NZ though, you have other backpacker Bus options, such as Magic Bus, and Stray.

If you have any particular questions about it, let me know, and I’ll be happy to answer them for you.

Hi Jayne,

Take a look at this link

http://www.malariahotspots.co.uk/html/en/malaria/

Northern Namibia seems to be a malaria area, don’t just rely on that link though, go and ask your doctor too :-)
