Appalachian Trail hiking tips?

For some crazy reason I’ve decided i want to spend at between 6 weeks- 3 months hiking the Appalachian trail in Eastern America.

Just wondering if anyone has done it and the best part to hike and in what season? Did you find the people and friendly and was it costly?

Was considering hiking somewhere cheaper but would feel safer in an English speaking country where i have friends to save me if captured by hillbillies !

If anyone has better ideas of places to hike there, please share !
But Bill Bryson inspired me :’)

Thanks ! xx

I can’t help on your question, but if you want further inspiration for the Trail I recommend you read A Walk Across America, probably one of my favourite books ever (its not available as new, but lots of 2nd hand versions on Amazon).

Hi

I can’t comment on the hiking of the Appalachian trial but i can thoroughly recommend it,. I worked in Virgina last season (May-August) and i drove along skyline drive from Virginia down to North Carolina.

The place is awesome and all the people where really good, and its worth just day tripping from the trial to the local towns where most of the people are really cool.
And in regards to the season, Summer was great although rather hot but its was blue skies and sun all the way!

Hope that helps!

Just wanted to agree with Bill Bryson being an inspiration!  I’ve just read his Walk in the Woods and it’s really sparked my adventurous streak!  I’ve never walked/hiked before but since reading it i want get out there and explore!
Sorry this isn’t a tip but good luck to you if you do it!!  I can’t comprehend walking that many miles but am very envious!!

xoxo

Fantastic, thanks Kev !
I love how upbeat the people on this site are !!

haha envious of the endless hiking? The blisters and exhaustion are worth the peace of mind and scenery i figure :)

If you want to try it go for it franks!! If your in England, theres some great routes in the New Forest 8) Gotta love Bill Brysons humour !

have a good summer guys

Just wrote a long reply and lost it, bloody Australian broadband. Anyway, you could start by looking at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s website - just look it up on google. Would really recommend joining a trail crew, doing conservation work on the trail, camping in some beautiful spots and it’s all free - food, accommodation, transport, pick up from the airport etc…. I did it for 2 weeks - 3months for about 3 summers back at uni and loved every minute. Again, go to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s website and go to volunteering ==> trail crew… Bargainous!
