Hey guys,
Just wondering if you reckon the jap enc vaccination is necessary if you’re spending about a week tubing in viang veng?
cheers
Hi did you ened up getting the jab before you went??! im of in under 3 weeks and havnt had it!? x
Well, it’s a balance of risks. Assuming you’re taking precautions against mossie bites, risk of J Encp. is pretty small (you can Google for the stats) and there is also a cost and small but notable risk involved in having the jab.
IIRC it’s generally only recommended if you’re in a risky area for at least a month, but I’m not a medical professional so don’t rely on anything I say :-)
I had a mild reaction to the first jab so they decided not to proceed with the immunisation.
The short answer is do your own research, talk to a medical professional if you’re still not sure, and make your own decision.
Anthony
Cheers! :D
Just to follow up on what Anthony has said, here is a link to a helpful medical document which explains the risk factors for Japanese Encephalitis and the suggested administration of the vaccine (i.e. factors doctors consider when deciding whether to give it to you or not).
Department of Health Green Book Japanese Encephalitis chapter
Page 5 of the pdf (or page 205 of the actual book) explains the risk factors.
