I’m really interested in doing some work with horses on a cattle ranch or something similar! I do ride, though I’m not an expert (!) , and have looked around online at places and reviews etc but wondered if anyone had advice/info they could share? Anything would be appreciated, thanks!

Hey there! I’m actually doing just what you want to do in Jan 2012 (I know its painfully long away!)

I would suggest searching for ‘dude ranchers association’ on google, this is in the USA south west area mainly I believe. I went on holiday to a ranch in Arizona which is both a small tourist ranch and a working cattle ranch and I’m now going out to volunteer there :)

Alternatively you could look for a variety of places at workaway.info or search ‘work away’ they seem to have a lot of this kind of volunteering available both in the USA, Canada and Australia!

I think many of these places use western riding styles anyway, so it would be difficult to know exactly what to do without having some lessons. Perhaps you could ask to volunteer as a general stable hand whilst taking a week’s worth of lessons (should be about enough - its easier than English!) and then try to become more of an active Cowgirl!

Ok so yeah,  dude ranchers association or workaway would be good places to start I think :)

Hope this helps!

Ooooh just to say!

Both of these will probably provide all food and accomodation too! Especially those on workaway but where I’m going its all provided as well!

So its actually a fairly cheap way to volunteer - although I would say the would prefer longer placements ie 1 month +

Sorry to keep going on!
