Hi there i am looking for some advice of who to contact. I qualify as a midwife in august next year and i hope to do some travelling with my qualification. Im not overlly keen to apply for just a job overseas i would rather do some backpack travelling that involved some voluntary midwifery work. Does anyone know of any companies that may have vacancies?
Hi Rachael,
I know it’s been a very long time since your post but I just came across it and wondered if you’d found a volunteer opportunity?
I am a midwife myself and have just returned from Zambia where I worked on mobile medical clinics in rural villages. It was the most amazing experience! The charity was set up by my sister, her boyfriend and a few others who are all doctors. It’s a very new and small charity so things are moving slowly. We did our initial 6 month pilot which went better than any of us could have hoped, unfortunately mainly due to financial problems we are now taking a break before getting the clinics up and running again early 2012.
Anyway have a look at the website if you have time and get in touch if you like the sound of what you see, even if you’re not looking to volunteer right now you should bare us in mind in the future (and spread the word to any colleauges keen to do something similar)!

Where did you study by the way?
I finished my training at Glasgow Caledonian in 2005.
All the best
Nicky
If you want some short-term volunteer placement opportunities to do on study leave or annual leave, drop me a message and I’ll send you a contact (to an organisation I used to work for, its more training than hands on work though. Countries are located in Africa and Asia). All expenses are paid as well.
I’ve been looking at something similar and there’s a company called projects abroad that offer electives. They also offer placements in various locations if you also hold a nursing / midwifery registration.
You may want to think about getting a job and completing a preceptorship package to gain your band 6 in midwifery and then think about taking a year out to travel / volunteer. It would give you experience as a qualified practicioner and also allow you to save up some cash. Just a thought to bear in mind.
You could also find a country in which you’d like to work - India, Uganda, etc and email a few hospitals directly. See if you could organise your own voluntary placement without having to pay a company to do it for you.

I had a look at Kristian’s contact - worth looking at and bearing in mind. :)
