Every website I visit seems to cater to the UK only. Am I reading this right? I’ve never purchased my own travel insurance before so I am a little lost. And from what Im reading I have to be from the UK or Australia to purchase most of the insurance policies that I’ve viewed. I need a backpacker option for going to Thailand for 3 months to scuba dive.
Apparently Americans don’t backpack as much, and thats why I’m not finding what I need??
Please help! :(
Surely there must be a US company somewhere?!?!
I mean you guys have everything here…...24hour pharmacy, 24 hour shopping, goodness no’s what else I am still trying to get my head round a lot of stuff.
Would a travel agency not have anything about it?

I’m insured with worldwideinsure.com - I’ve not had to claim (touch wood), so can’t really give a review of their service, but the terms fitted me well. They will insure you out of USA.

As said above though, surely there must be more!?
What are you googling? Try “backpacker travel insurance”...!
Do you have STA travel over there? They do backpacker insurance, albeit a bit on the pricier side.
go to google
type in ” travel insurance for Americans”
pretty simple
I always thought a large majority of the backpacking community were americans??? well iv never done backpacking but thats what i always assumed :? :?

I don’t think they are…..
I have only really met 2 or 3 Americans whilst travelling… Most are European/English/Aussie ......
European/English
the english are also european you know
Ha ha, I know! If I’d have put just European, someone would have come along and said “what about the English!”
GGRRRRRRRRRRR
Well I am going to try looking at worldwideinsure. The name does seem like it would cover EVERYONE. But to be honest typing in travel insurance for Americans, US citizens… none of that ever brings back what I need. I guess because I’m searching backpackers insurance. And the States doesn’t offer that option from what I can see. Americans are less traveled (probably because our country is so big) A lot of Americans take one week vacations and thats it ( not really fun) and I just think Americans are less traveled in general because they are lazy! I on the other hand am so bored being here, I need to get out of this country and see something different! lol.
This company insures US travellers and had a few plans to pick from… I haven’t booked yet, but let me know what else you find as I’m from the US and heading to AUS in October so Im going to need some insurance also!

Just go to Google.com and type travel insurance and look at the links that it reveals. You may need to go through the quote facility to find the right cover but it will be there. Although Americans tend not to be as big travellers as other countries, doesn’t mean that you can’t buy travel insurance.
It doesn’t have to be a ‘backpacker’ policy as long as it covers what you need. For a start, go to STA Travel website and look at what they offer.

So far what i’ve found is that if you go here:
http://www.worldwideinsure.com/international_IMG_SelectaPlan.htm
US or Non-US citizens can purchase International Comprehensive travel insurance, during the application you can choose the “Adventure Sports Rider Option” and this will cover some sports activities. Be Sure to look at which ones it covers though!
Right now I am leaning towards the “Patriot Adventure International” insurance
found here:
http://www.patriotamericainsurance.net/patriot-adventure-insurance/
The sole reason being because it covers more advanced sports activities (in my case it covers Scuba Diving to 50 meters) The only reason Im not sure is that the maximum coverage is only $50,000 and the deductible is $250. That is the only coverage option they give you for this plan.
With the other plan above they give you more coverage options (but it doesnt cover scuba diving at all).
See how stupidly complicated it is. EVERY UK site Ive been to offers travel insurance that includes diving coverage… and for a whole lot cheaper! Not to mention they all have a higher maximum coverage.
Not that I expect an acccident to happen but god forbid one did those decompression chambers are expensive! What a headache :(
Hey, I’m facing the same problem! I found this website which seems pretty cheap and covers most sports (including scuba diving)
