Hello everybody,
I am planning my next trip for March next year and just need some advice. I have already travelled for 18 months. USA, Fiji & Oz. But now I want to do South America-NZ-SE Asia for 7 months. My problem is I don’t really know do I want to go to South America on my own, Is it safe enough as a solo female traveller, baring in mind I’d stick out like a sore thumb with blonde hair and white skin. I’d prob leave Brazil out if I had to go it alone as I have heard its the most dangerous for women. I
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I’ve been to Peru, and although I wasn’t on my own, I would have felt safe enough to be on my own. When I first arrived I barely wanted to walk down a block on my own and by the end I was walking around on my own with a bag that didn’t even do up properly, that was how safe I felt.
It’s really easy to tell which taxis are licensed or not and I never felt bothered by anyone during the day, although we did get a few stares when we went to local restaurants or shops (one of the girls I was with is very tall and I think they were just amazed a woman could be so big!)
Even at night time I wasn’t ever particularly worried. At bars and clubs you’ll get asked to dance a million times but it was always completely innocent (which other people I was travelling with were surprised by because I think some other countries in South America get a bit too touchy) I once rejected some guy’s offer for a dance and he came back and insisted that it really was just dancing haha! You get a few mi amors but they’re not hard to shake off with some stories of your fiancĂ© back home.
Only thing I would say is that nearly every time I tried to book or buy something I would be given a higher price that when the guys did it - I think they assume they can just take you for a ride because you’re a woman.
I spent 3 months in South America as a lone, solo female and had no problems. As long as you have some common sense you will be fine. Just learn a little bit of the lingo before you go and you’ll be fine.
Hey there - I just saw your post about traveling South America, I am going in March flying into Chili and then flying to Argentina overland to Iguassu falls at the bottom of Brazil, then flying from there to Bolivia overland to Peru (inca trail etc) flying to Brazil then to Guatemala overland to mexico ... on my own.
If you want to chat, add me on FB if you have, I wouldn’t mind some company!
I would say you should be okay, as long as your are sensible. Although this is coming from a guy, I traveled on and off with a lot of different girls who all at some point traveled by themselves.
The only thing is a few girls said in Peru they felt the men stare at them more than in countries like Bolivia.
One of my friends is still over there and couch surfs everywhere and has only good things to say, if you can speak a bit of the language it helps even more.
Ill be in Chile mid april, and the over to the north of Argentina, up through Bolivia and Peru until late June, so give us a shout if your about!
Im also a lone female, but Im pretty sure you won’t spend much time by yourself! Plenty of like minded people are out there :)
Hey guys u set any plans in stone yet?
I’m getting a rtw ticket but will spend the majority of May-August in South America, hoping to do a bit of a road trip :)
I’ve put up a post or two about my plans - check it out!
Stu :)
