Has anyone been nursing abroad? Interested in any country really.
Any advice on how I would need to go about doing this would be great, and any travel stories would be most helpful!
Thanks!
Well first of all you’d have to get yourself registered with the foreign countries equiavalent of the NMC. Places like Aus, NZ, Ireland and Canada would be the easiest to transfer to. Once you had your qualifications and registration confirmed you could then apply for jobs. You’d still have to go through CRB checks like you would when applying for jobs in the UK.
Just look on the RCN website - I’m sure they have a link to international nursing jobs. If not use google - there are plenty of agencies available that cater for nurses, doctors and midwives. Try staffing synergy - if you are interested in Aus.
It also may help to speak a second language, especially if you wanted to work within the EU. If you want to volunteer then the company ‘projects abroad’ do medical / nursing placements all over the world.
Definitely depends big time as to where you hold current registration and where you are planning on going.
Word on the st is UK to aus/Nz is pretty easy (some australian governments will sponsor you and pay all your fees.. Including flights)
NZ/AUS to the UK you need to sit a bunch of exams (including english)..
NZ to Canada is virtually impossible unless you plan on immigrating,. As you need supervised hours they aren’t happy to provide if youre on a one year visa..
Completely depends..
But whatever you decide make sure you look into registration FAR in advance!!
The good thing about getting a registration in Aus is that once you’ve had enough of working there, or your visa runs out you can transfer your registration accross to NZ pretty easily.
I can’t wait to get travelling in 2014 and head to Aus for work, and then hopefully NZ too! What kind of nursing were you interested in?
