Best to stick to a chain and then your connected to a whole network,

that will make it easier to find if you wanted to plan in advance

the rule of thumb with motels is just pull over when your sleepy there are a load of them.

just to get you started the big motel chains that are rather bog line affordable and bog line standards

super 8

http://www.super8.com/

Studio 6

http://www.staystudio6.com/

those two will almost cover you across USA along with best western.

But If you want my advise, always stop off at the mum and pop stops when ever possible when given the chance, its 50% 50% with the service in standards but when you find a good one the hospitality is really friendly and they need the money compared to the big chains.

they will be the ones your remember most as well.

I agree with Dave about the family owned Motels, hit and miss, but when you hit a good one, they’re amazing! Ask to see the room before you commit to handing over the money!

A few more motels - Motel 6’s are throughout California and potentially Nevada (I know they have one in Vegas) and a few more states out that way. The Red Roof Inns tend to be good too.

As for hostels, in the cities there will be a fair selection of them, any Hostelling International is going to be good quality for a hostel, but they can be known for being a little more expensive and quiet/not as much opportunity to meet other travellers. However that said, I’ve stayed in some amazing HI’s in the US - Boston, Nantucket and Chicago are the ones that spring to mind! The ones in New York and Seattle are fine, but I’d recommend the Green Tortoise in Seattle and Zip112 in New York though!

Hey- It depends where and when you are going and if you are on your own.
There are some ace hostels but not always! Chains include:

Quality inn hotel
Best Western
Days Inn
Holiday Inn (prices vary place to place but if there are two of you hotels can be the same price as hostels!)

Hostels I would say:

Seattle: Green Tortoise
San Fran: Green Tortoise
LA: Bannana Bungalow, though I stayed at Stay hotel in downtown and that was ok
Roswell: Wigwam motel!

Miami: Santa Barbara hostel
Daytonal: Americas best holiday Inn (not the best lol)
New York- Jazz on the park
Boston- I did not use the HI as it was more than where I stayed but I would now pay the extra lol

I wrote a really long article about the USA which gapyear have added to the USA bit of the site. Sure it doesnt have everything but think it covers a lot of info that you may need :) xx
