I am planning fundraisers for my gap year this fall. I have $4,000 saved up (USD) and need about $6,000 more. I came up with a fundraiser idea and so far my parents have not liked the idea but some friends have.  I live near a bunch of lakes and there are bike/walk paths connecting 50 miles of lakes, rivers and parks. The idea is to walk the entire 50 miles over two days dressed up in some sort of costume, (I’m thinking of going as a tree becuase part of my gap year is some reforestation work, or a llama because I’m going to Peru for some of it). Anyways, I’ve put together some questions to see whether this is a good fundraiser or not…

Thank you!

1) If I saw someone dressed as a tree walking around a lake in the summer while I was walking, biking or hanging out and they were wearing a t-shirt that said “Ask me why I’m doing this” I would…

2) If the tree person were to tell me they were rasing money to volunteer overseas and that their volunteer work would include reforestation, a women’s empowerment project, volunteering at an orphanage and volunteering in a hospital in India I would
a) Donate a couple dollars
b) Wish them luck
c) Visit their website or blog
d) Tell friends about it
e) Mumble and walk away
(Pick one or multiple)

Okay one more question if you were planning a fundraiser like this how would you go about getting local businesses, friends and family to sponsor you? Per mile or lake? If so how much is reasonable to ask?

Thanks again! :)

Ok also I was originally gonna ask the questions in a poll but it only lets me do one question so just ignore that at post your answers in a reply.

Thanks!

Personally I think a lot of people (when asked before doing the route) would donate, however when walking around the lake personally I’d do B+D. I’d do it per mile and see what people offer, if they ask say the minimum amount is 10p/mile as that’s only a fiver and you can probably get quite a few people to donate a fiver (and a lot will probably donate more) (Parents/Grandparents/Aunts/Uncles/Cousins/Family friends will usually donate more then 10p per mile)

If you have a Rotary club near you or some where where a lot of old people gather put together a slide show let them know what you’re doing and a lot of the time they’ll donate, I did it for a Tanzania trip, there was 8 of us and their little clubs donated £800 :D which was brilliant :)  All they asked for in return was a slide show of pictures and how we helped :)

You should definitely dress up as a popular animal in one of the countries your visiting :)
Hope this helped :)
