I have been hearing alot about goon and it seems to be the thing for back packers to drink in australia. I imagine the binge drinking over there isn’t the same as England therefore no cheap vodka or shots.

So I’m just wanting to really find out what this goon is. From what I have read so far it seems alot like country manor which is a 3 litre box of 7.5% wine for about £6! If someone says it’s the same then bring on drinking goon!

that’s right, goon is basically casked wine, so any wine in a box, I think the cheapest I have bought before was 4 litres for $10! and it gets you smashed (but also helps you to gain a few pounds!). its the cheapest drink you can get over here, and it’s not nice but backpackers all go for it!

Fortunately I went to Oz when beer in bars was affordable and didn’t have to have Goon

We’d hit happy hours around town until they all finished, then get on the Goon.

Was always a last resort.

The white wine version of goon tastes infinitely better with a splash of apple juice. Great tip.

It does give you the worst hangovers ever though.

My mum drinks cheapo boxed wine in Spain, 60c for a litre. If it’s anything like that I’ll be avoiding it, tastes rank! Only good for cooking in my opinion.

It was called ‘goon’ 25 years ago, and the origins of the term are lost to antiquity. Our preferred tipple was ‘Fruity Lexia’ (renamed ‘Fruity Dislexia’) and is listed under the Wiki entry for ‘drinking for effect’

It does the job, but the preservatives they have to put in it to survive in the harsh environments it is found in can cause something of a hangover in those susceptible.

To quote Monty Python, “This is one for laying down .. and avoiding.”

Goon = Cask Wine = Gross

Wikipedia cask wine

You’ll know a goon from the plastic tap on the side.

It’s cheap as anything considering it comes by the litre but be warned that it’s just as tasty as balsamic vinegar.

You’ll either see them at old people’s BBQ’s or at crazy house parties full of late teens-20 somethings.

Personally, I wouldn’t go there…Australia has great wine that doesn’t come in a plastic bag.

That’s an insult to cooking!
