This question has been covered in dribs and drabs across this forum and I’ve seen various answers just by asking Google, but I was wondering if I could get a more definite answer.

I am flying to Sofia in June with a friend to go interrailing.. the plan is to travel around Eastern Europe before heading across Italy/France/Spain to get to Barcelona for mid July. I’ve heard that an Interrail pass price is very much based on the train prices in and around Central Europe and in terms of Eastern Europe it is better value to either buy train tickets there and then or use coaches. So, would we be better off getting a short term interrail pass for just travelling across Italy/France/Spain and buying tickets for Eastern Europe when we get there or would you recommend going for a longer term pass - we’re currently looking at the 22day ones - for the whole trip?

Thanks in advance!!! :D

Just in terms of saving money?! Do you have any experience of the coaches in Eastern Europe? People generally seem to regard them as quite cheap and not too bad..? Might have to rethink buying that interrail pass then..! Thanks :)

Yeah ive got a fair few buses in Eastern europe, they are fine in my opinion. And in all fairness you never really need to go far in them. You can also use trains and ferries etc.

But the prices in western europe for trains and buses can be killer!

So I’d probably be best off getting an interrail pass for the time we’re in Italy/France/Spain and winging it in Eastern Europe? But then if I’m thinking along those lines I might as well look at flight prices from Italy to Barcelona.. we’re not that fussed about France, given I live here at the moment so I wonder for £154 I could get a flight for cheaper? Ahhh decisions, thanks for your help!
