Hi, can anyone recommend any hostels in Kuala Lumpur, preferably quite cheap but i’m willing to pay a bit more for a decent place to stay…

Also if anyone has any tips on what i should see/visit/do there that’d be really useful too…

KL is a great place to do my usual trick of wandering into nice hotels with £20 and asking for a room.

I did this successfully in the Corus hotel in KL a couple of times. Never paid more than £20 for a room there, and the pool is decent too.

For places to stay in KL you’d wanna do something around Petaling Street or Brickfielda area. It’s basically the centre of KL, the local train’s - monorail, LRT and KTM are all a 2 min walk away and every bus passes these routes. In KL you have the basics - Twin Towers, KL Tower, TimeSquare, Midvalley, Tugu Negara, Planetarium, BirdPark, National Museum, Bukit Bintang, Heritage Row etc. At all cost avoid bus or the cab, the traffic in KL is horrendous. The trains stop at just about all these places, you wont go wrong with that.

As for places outside of KL, Cameron Highlands for the nature and beauty, Genting Highlands for the casino and entertainment, Penang for the best food and awesome snake temples etc. Please please please if can, avoid Langkawi. It’s expensive, too damned touristy and defaced of all it’s beauty for local tourism to boom. Pangkor and Tioman makes for excellent, peaceful and much cheaper choices in the Peninsula. If you’d rather go all mother nature on Malaysia, Taman Negara or National Park is the place to be. Camping, trekking, caving, canoeing, white water rafting, mountain climbing - the list of things here is endless. Hope this helps you out. Oh one last thing, please order any meals without spice, in general its super spicy to suit the asian flavour and because of the mix of ethnicity they have gone gung ho on the spices in the Malaysian food. They taste fantastic but if you aint used to it by your second meal you’d be craving McDonalds and Fish and Chips. Have a blast eh :)
