Hey, I have flights booked to Sydney for New Year, for 5 days, but don’t know where to stay! I get that everything’s getting booked up quick and most have a min stay of 7 days, but it’s my 22nd birthday on New Year’s Eve, so I need somewhere that’s friendly, and obviously still available.
If anyone has any suggestions, or would like to celebrate my birthday with me that would be both helpful and nice :)
Hi Nat,
It would be lovely to meet up and celebrate your birthday. I’m travelling to Oz in October but will be in Sydney until after the New year. I’m in the same boat trying to find accomodation. All the best hostels seem to be booked up. There are still quite a few hotels left which are nice but expensive and the only hostels left dont seem to have the best reviews. I’l let you know if i find any and keep me updated on what you find too :)

Awww that sounds cool! I think i’m gonna book whatever I can find before it all gets sold out. After all, how often will you get to do this?! My flights were pretty cheap, so I’ not going to worry too much.
Do you have any plans for your travels yet?! I have a job until early February so can’t do any proper travelling till then, but i’m looking forward to Sydney already!! xxx
Yer you may as well, saves the stress of worrying about it before you go. I might just book somewhere too, I’m sure with all the amazing things to do it will just be a place to rest my head. What dates are you going to book for? I was thinking of just booking from the 18th-4th jan to be safe.
Wow, you have a job already how did you manage that? Impressed Haha. Where r u working?
My plan is to head into Sydney in October, find work until after new year and then head up the easy coast finding jobs along the way. I have a year and I’m travelling solo so just going to go with the flow really. Where ru going to travel after your job?

I agree about the place to rest your head! I only have 5 days, from 30th to the 4th, but will probs have to book the minimum of 7 days, and just lose out on the extra 3 days… i’m not too worried about that!!
As for my job, i’m an au pair so just went through a website and found a host family… they seem amazing! have spoke to them on skype etc so its all legit haha. They live 4 hours outside of Melbourne near the grampian mountains, on a farm so i get to do some farm work which may count towards my 88 days!
After my job, i’ll be heading the same way as you no doubt, it seems most people go that way but obviously will do some more research on a POA later… i can’t believe i leave for Oz in 36 days!!! aaaaaah

Hi Alex! Your route sounds similar to mine! I’d love to do Thailand but didn’t want to go there solo so was planning on going when i made some friends! I’m hoping to have a cheeky visit to Fiji too… although i’m not too good with open water! haha. Do you have any proper plans yet or just a rough idea? x
That’s good at least you’ve got something booked ey, I’m hoping to have an apartment by then now so I should be sorted too :)
Wow, how amazing will that be. Well done getting that job, I’m sure itl be awesome. You must be so excited I have over 100 days and don’t stop talkin about it haha. Yer everybody does seem to be doing the same thing with other countries afterwards too, I’d love to try Fiji after oz. I want to fit as much in as possible.

I’ve left accommodation too late too! I’m looking at staying on one of the train lines out of th city.
But having a few people to watch the fireworks with and go out would be good!
I booked my hostel!!! I managed to get a bed in Base last night; they still have beds available for a reasonable price so check it out!! I got 7 days for £222 which is much better than i was expecting… only using 5 of them though coz i stupidly booked a 5 day return flight!
have to agree with you Jenny about it’ll be nice to watch the fireworks… i’m gonna do some research as to where is the best to watch them! can’t wait to celebrate my birthday there!!! xx
Yeah good plan! Shame about the spare 2 nights tho, maybe u can sell them to someone lol.
I’ve mostly heard that it is a must to be able to have a good view of the bridge, and all the prime spots go early! They have two sets of fireworks as well, one for kids and one at midnight!
Can’t wait! x
Sydney for NYE is off the hook. I was there back in 2009 / 2010 and it was so much fun! Ah, wel jel…
Hey Nat, they’re just ideas atm but Fiji-Nz-Asia is the dream and was hoping that once in Australia they’ll be people to go with.
I’m in Oz from October and havn’t made any other plans yet as trying to sort out finances before i GO (there’s so much to buy!)
x
The two sets of fireworks sounds like a good idea! sober for one, and not so sober for the other!! How exciting!!
Macca - do you have any tips for where to watch from?
Alex - I wouldnn’t worry about finding people to go with, there’ll be loads doing the same thing!! as for buying stuff, tell me about it. I’ve spent so much money already :( all worth it though!!

The Rocks YHA has an amazing rooftop terrace which would be awesome if you could get there! They even do a BBQ and make a whole day of it. I’d look into it now though - I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re already booked up!
If not, getting down to the Rocks itself is amazing (which is what I did), and over in the Botanical Gardens would be just as good as well.
Bondi have a big fireworks party which a lot of backpackers go to, but I think it’s all about Circular Quay and Harbour Bridge - after all, its one of THE places to spend NYE!

Have to agree on this bit! I’m not paying all that money to not see the Bridge!! Thanks for your advice :)
