Hey People.
I’m looking to integrate some sports coaching with travel next summer for around 8 weeks; however I have no idea where would be best to go. I like the sound of America or Australia but I am open to any recommendations. I’m aiming in the price range of between £1000-£1200
Cheers.
BUNAC/CCUSA/Camp America are usually on the look out for people to coach sports on US Summer Camps.
The camps however usually want you to work for 9 weeks (7.5 - 8 weeks with the campers, and the remainder setting up/closing down camp).
After that, you’re then free to travel for something like a month.
You have to pay upfront costs, like admin fees to the UK company as well as stuff like insurance and visa fees to the US Embassy, but as a first timer, you flight would be covered at the beginning, and the UK company would take the cost of your flight out of your wages, and you’d be left with the rest.
What you get paid differs depending on how old you are, what job you do at camp and which agency you go through. I think in recent years the rules have changed for working on a camp in New York state too.
I worked as a general counselor back in 2006/2007, so if you have any questions ask away.
All I would say is get the application in early. It’s a very lengthy time consuming process and the earlier you apply, the better chance you have of being placed at a camp/good camp. April 2013 will be too late, October/November 2012 is an ideal time to apply.
Thanks for your reply, I think 9 weeks should be fine for next year. its been a great help :)
Hey Luke. I’ve done some amazing sports coaching projects with http://www.volunteervacations.co.uk - keep going back and doing more! What sort of sports are you interested in? They do rugby coaching in Swaziland which also aims to provide AIDS education, and loads of different sports in South Africa as well as other countries like Thailand etc. I know their website is being updated at the moment but it still has all the info on it, its a small, personal company that makes sure you get what you want out of the project.
I did the placement in South Af 2 summers ago and cant recommend it enough - as well as spending 5 weeks coaching sport, I also had the opportunity to teach in schools and visit orphanages if I wanted to. I also went on several safaris, some are included in the price, did a road trip to cape town with friends, spent the weekend surfing in Jeffreys Bay, went shark diving, bungee jumping, sky diving, spent a night in a slum (provided by the placement so it is safe but such an eye-opening experience!) - just so much! There were about 30 other volunteers my age so it was so much fun as well as a really amazing experience.
Anyway sorry i could go on about it for ages! Have an incredible time wherever you go and feel free to ask any questions! xx
