I’m beginning to plan my gap year for 2013, but actually have no idea where to start! I’m hoping on basing myself in London and then exploring from there. I was wondering if anyone had any advice about whether to go through a gap year agency, any social organisations I should get involved with, any great places I should go etc. or if someone could just point me in the right direction to getting to the UK :) Happy travelling everyone!

Would help if we knew where you were coming from!

Anyway, with regards to places to go get a lonely planet guide.

Most people will warn against going with a gap year agency and I tend to agree. The UK is an expensive place so any organised “gap year tours” will have huge costs.

Great, thank you for that. I’ll go and get one. I live in South Africa, but I have an Australian passport which will be helpful.

The best way of doing it is by yourself.  I did a three month tour of America with Trek America and it cost me a fortune and to be honest it wasnt that good.  Dont get me wrong i did see alot of the country but we had a itinerary that we had to stick to and we never got enough time in each place.

So if your thinking about doing an organised tour you should take all this into consideration first.
