Just got quoted £2,044 including tax for the following route:

Edinburgh - Bangkok - Hong Kong overland to Beijing - Melbourne - Los Angeles - New York - Edinburgh

I’ve seen people with similar itineraries getting RTW tickets for more like £1,600. This was from trailfinders and the only quote I’ve got so far. I asked how much the flights were individually and they said they would be at least double the cost which I know for a fact isn’t true. I’ll be checking out STA and RTW Experts soon and see what they say. Definitely seems like they’re trying to rip me off as they have sample itineraries on their website that are not unlike mine for about half the price! What do you reckon?

Absolute rip off although I bet if you asked for a quote from London the price would dramatically drop.

Fairly expensive alright for a very standard trip. What dates are you looking at?

I dont think the edingurgh/London thing should make much of a difference though as I fly through London from Ireland and flights are actually cheaper than going direct from London. But do try different starting point in the UK and see if its cheaper even though adding in costs of getting to these places might off set the price anyway

Definately try a few other companies and is it possible to cut out the Bangkok - HK flight and make your way overland or possibly get a cheap air asia flight?

I was possibly going to do that anyway. Air Asia FTW. I’m probably not even gonna go for a RTW ticket in the end, just wanted to see how much it would save me out of curiosity. I want to travel very casually in Asia and I don’t think it would play well with having the rigid timetable and destinations of a RTW ticket.

As for my dates, I’m leaving mid January and returning towards the end of August.

The ticket was using the British Airways/Qantas route. I was thinking maybe I could investigate the cost of a ticket from Edinburgh - Bangkok - Sydney - Los Angeles - New York - Edinburgh and just use standard flights for Asia that I book as I go. Might work out a bit cheaper as I’m guessing the Qantas flights for within Asia are a lot more expensive than Air Asia.

Dont forget Air Asia also fly from Malaysia to Sydney or a new ( i think) airline called flyscoot fly singapore to Sydney so you could get a good deal on that leg of your trip too.

If I were you id book everything except the Bangkok to Sydney route before you go that is if your planning on staying in asia for a couple of months and then just go with the flow but of course there is a risk you mightnt end up gettting a good deal on the flight to oz but chances are you will as air asia is always doing sales!

Probably just going to wing it. I can’t commit to an itinerary that I’ll still be doing a year from now in return for minimal (or in this case, non existant) savings.
