Hi guys,
I kinda booked my RTW ticket to the places I wanna go, without doing much research.
Now I’ve done some research and a lot of reading on Thailand scams/arrests/stories etc… I’m kinda worried about the whole Thailand thing where they do you over for accusing you of shoplifting at Duty Free, or planting drugs into your luggage/bag, bribery and all.
So I’m now considering to sack off Thailand, and go Fiji/Canada instead.
What do you guys think? Am I just too paranoid or am I right in thinking other countries will give me more peace of mind?
Absolute paranoia running wild. As long as you don’t go looking to buy diamonds, suits, drugs etc in Thailand and don’t attempt to start a fight with anyone you will be fine.
Are you being serious? Thailand is one of the safest places for travellers. Unless you are a total wimp then you should be fine there.
Also your suggestion of Fiji is quite funny. Nadi (where you fly in and out) is one of the dodgiest, most unsafe places I have ever been. It isn’t all tropical beaches and smiles.
The fact you are worried about this makes me worry about you a little bit to be honest. Do you really have such little confidence in yourself that you believe you’ll definitely be scammed?
Most things come down to common sense, wherever you are in the world. Watch your bags and pockets, if you don’t like a situation then move on etc. Just read up about common scams before you go. If you have half a brain and an ounce of common sense, you will be able to avoid them.
You’ll be fine in Thailand. There’s the potential to be scammed in whatever country you visit. I’ve been reading a lot recently about India and that seems to be scam central but the country still fascinates me and I’m still going. If the worst that happens to you on your trip is that you were scammed for a bit of extra cash then you’ll have an amazing time.

Yeah there was definitely a lot of scamming/attempted scamming going on in India, but you only need to have a little bit of common sense to figure this out :) The worst that could happen is you’ll lose about 100 Rupee.
Anyway, to the OP: don’t let the ‘What If’s’ put you off a country. You could be ripped off at home. Everyone I met travelling who’d been to Thailand absolutely loved it there, felt safe and made me wish I was going there. Don’t miss out on a country because someone might charge you £5 for a taxi. When these things happen, they just smarten you up for the next time someone tries to rip you off or make you buy a suit or ‘genuine’ Ray Bans. Just go, have fun, go with the flow and don’t be afraid to say no to people trying to drag you into their shop ;)
Yeah but they aren’t the kind of scams he’s talking about.
He’s been watching ‘banged up abroad’ too much and he thinks somebody is going to plant heroin in his backpack before he leaves.
I have the same paranoia as well. My aunts friend was so paranoid he’d sew up the pockets so he knew if anyone had been in his bag x
