Hey, my boyfriend and I are heading to Thailand arriving in Bangkok on the 30th October and we leave from Singapore on the 3rd December. Obviously that’s more than the 30 days permitted in Thailand visa free and so we thought we would travel from Chiang Mai into Laos to head to Vang Vieng to do the tubing and we were wondering what’s the best way to go about this?
When I was in Vang Vieng last year an English lad died while tubing.
Just saying.
ok well thanks for the warning but just really wondering the best way to go about this ?
Also Vang Vieng town is a total crap hole, full of wankers.

2 people died when I was there but it was rainy season and everything was flooded and people werent using common sense. I thought VV was great stayed there for 8 days!
Its actually quite far from Chiang mai and im not sure what the easiest way to go about it is.
Probably get a bus to Vientiene and then VV is 4 hours from there. Or if you have time, get thebus to the border at huay xia andt take the 2 day slow boat or overnight bus to luang prabang and then VV is about 9 hours from there.
There might be an easier way but im not sure

Really? I have never been around a bigger bunch of cretins in my life than the ‘travellers’ that inhabit that place. It’s like somebody uprooted Ibiza and moved it to Laos. I actually love a party as some on here will tell you, and I’m no saint, but this place is something else.
It’s a shame as the surrounding countryside is incredibly beautiful… it’s probably worth a visit just for that.
But EIGHT days? Christ. You clearly suffer fools quite easily.
You get your fair share of twats there like the people who stay there for 3 months and are just on drugs or the whole thing but most people are just there to have a bit of fun!
Well the 8 days wasnt exactly by choice as there had been so much flooding we actually couldnt go tubing a lot of the time.I also had to wait 4 days for a visa there but still I enjoyed it.
I’d reccomend taking the slow boat (2 days) from the Laos Border to Luang Prabang. Had a great time on the boat. Don’t take the fast boat very dangerous. The boat inc transfer can easily be arranged from Chang Mai
Luang Prabang is nice and chilled with plenty to see
Transport to Vang Vieng is easy to arrange in LP
As others have said Vang Vieng is full of dicks but I still had a good time (2 nights was enough for me). The tubing is fine if you aren’t the type who is stupid when drunk. Many people do the tubing once and then don’t bother subsequent days and just walk (or swim) between the bars as the tubing for Laos is a rip off and you have to be back by a certain time
I’d also go with the slow boat, take your time and enjoy the ride.
I took an over night bus from Chiang Mai, it’s possibly the most dangerous thing I’ve done all trip,.We were squeezed into a mini bus and had the same driver driving pretty much constantly for 12 hours, I could see his eyes closing in the last hour of the journey.
I know other people have taken a bus directly from Bangkok, I don’t know how good it was but it seems like they missed out on so much by skipping northern Thailand (CHiang Mai etc.)
As for the people going on about how dangerous the tubing is, of course it’s dangerous but as long as you’re sensible then the risks are minor. Don’t do stupid stuff, don’t get too drunk and you’ll be fine. You shouldn’t skip such an amazing opportunity just because some people get too drunk and get hurt/killed. Hundreds of people go tubing every day (even in the quiet season) and almost all of them get home safely. I spent a week there and at no point did I ever feel like I was in danger.
