That is the question.
In a nutshell I’m starting a career break on Dec 1st for 12 months, I’ve resigned, got my house sorted and now I’m looking to buy a RTW ticket.
I’m not completely against it but I don’t intend to work much if at all while away, possibly some volunteer work in places.
I have a budget of £10k & I’m wondering if that will be enough for the following, loose plan. (My ticket doesn’t come out of that budget)
Leave from - Arrive into [duration of stay]
UK - Brazil (Rio) [12 weeks]
Chile (Santiago) - NZ [8 weeks]
NZ - Fiji [2 weeks]
Fiji - Aus [8 weeks]
Aus - Bali [2 weeks]
Bali - Thailand (Bangkok) [12 weeks]
Thailand - India [4 weeks]
India - UK
This is an original plan I did a few months back but I’m now thinking I should shorten my stays in Aus & NZ to make sure my budget lasts. Sticking to places my £ stretches furthest for longer.
Its a 48 week long trip which amounts to just short of £30 spend per day.
Any thoughts or advice on this would be most appreciated, am I doing too much and does my plan/budget look realistic?
Cheers!
I’m a little baffed as to length of stays. E.g. are you doing 2 or 8 weeks in New Zealand?
As for NZ 2 weeks is to short and 8 weeks is to long in my humble.
Weird, I’m also leaving Dec 1st for a career break, though I’ve now extended to 15 months.
I speak not from experience but from planning and research for my own trip and I’d say that you are on a knifes edge with that budget though I’m happy to be corrected. Aus and NZ aren’t the only problems, you’ve picked the 2 most expensive places in South America to travel to.
With that trip I’d want closer to £15k if you wanted to take the odd tour, though £13k would maybe suffice. But then maybe you can live a lot more cheaply than most, again my information isn’t backed by experience, it’s an informed opinion but not a hard and fast rule so let’s hear what the more seasoned travellers have to say.
My initial target for 12 months was £15k, I’ll be shooting closer to £20k by the time I leave, so 15 months is a provisional extension. I’ll either continue to move until the money burns out or return home with some spare cash if I get travel-weary.

8 weeks in NZ, 2 weeks in Fiji, the length of stay next to the destination I’ve just landed - if that makes sense!
I’ll travel surface from Brazil to Chile, taking in Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru along the way, at least thats the plan.

The budget is starting to worry me, but i’m thinking by halving my time in Aus & NZ I could manage it. I have money tied up in a car that would get me to £13k I’m just hesitant to sell it at the minute. Saves me a job finding one when i get back and I’m pretty keen on it, hmmm.
Just noticed the budget. 10k will definately not be enough for 11 months of travel. I would cut New Zealand down to 4-5 weeks for starters and maybe only 10 days on Fiji. I loved NZ but considering budget that is plenty of time to do it all
Consider wwoofing or helpx (helpx is far cheaper than the wwoof website) in NZ and/or Aus… I’ve met a bunch of people who have done it in NZ and havent heard ANYTHING negative (seems to be rather hit and miss in Aus though)
along with couch surfing…
And I guess ask yourself what would be more annoying.. having to buy a new car when you get back.. or having to cut your trip short…
If you’re commited to really sticking to a STRICT budget you can make it work.. but just do it from day one… don’t wait until you’re a few months in and realise you really could have cut back a lot more to begin with..
(If you have heard of wwoof, helpx or CS google them!)

Punt it. Along with anything else you don’t really need. Liberate yourself man.

I’m just back and have managed to make $400 already selling pointless crap I held onto before my trip.. in a week!
Sell everything. Sell yourself.

What a cool website helpx is! I’d never heard of it so thanks for that - saved in my favourites!!

I’ve no doubt you’re right, you’ll think I’m nuts when I say I’ve another car in storage too!! But that’s worth more than money - to me anyhow.
Although after reading the advice I’ve had a rethink & decided I can do better. I’ll squeeze more out of my last 4 paydays & sell more ‘unnecessary’ possessions. I think a budget of £15k is doable for Dec, I’m nearly at £10k now so with a bit more commitment I’m sure I’ll manage it!
I think I’ll cut down my stays in Aus/NZ & Fiji too, soak up more of South America & SE Asia.
wwoofing is more widely known and update a bit more frequently.
But Helpx more variety in jobs.. good for winter.. and unlike woofing you only pay one subscription fee and then you can change your country accordingly.. wheras wwoofing you have to pay subscription for each country.. annnoying!
