Hello,

Looking for some advice…

I booked to travel to New Zealand at end of Oct (working holiday visa granted in Jan 2012).

The little issue I have is I got into a relationship not long after the visa been granted and said I wouldn’t be going anymore, but when I rang up to cancel my visa (thinking I could cancel and have the opportunity to re-use it in a few years time) the person at the other end said ‘It’s not possible and IT’S A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY’.

When they said this it was a kick in the teeth and I knew I wanted to go again… I know I can’t go in Oct now as I have lots of work on over Xmas.

The reason I would like to use it in a few years time is I was going to go back to college to do a two year HNC course which I thought would be good to have behind me if I went looking for a job away.

Another thing that stopped me going is I was in a relationship last time I went travelling and cut my travelling short as I was missing my partner back home.

And now I’ve said I’m not going, but now I want to what should I do?

So I kind of feel it’s all happening again!

What I was thinking maybe go for a 3 week holiday to NZ in Jan, this will start my Visa for a year and then I can extend it for another 11months…

I should also add that my partner isn’t that big on traveling but would like to see America at some point. I was thinking of saying maybe go to NZ and USA but I know they don’t have the funds to do this.

Just wondering what people think/ any advice really if any of my post made sense ha!

Thanks :)

Hey,

Wow, you were quick to cancel your visa!

I was in a relationship when I decided I wanted to go travelling.. we did break up before I went (for mostly unrelated reasons) but deep down I knew I wanted to go away above all else.

The thing is, as much as you love your partner, relationships come and go.. If it’s meant to last it’ll last. Can’t you try heavily persuading them to go with you? Ha. As regards saying you weren’t going and now you want to…well people change their minds all the time!

What would you study? I don’t know the situation in NZ but I can imagine there are plenty of casual jobs for travellers so maybe you should just go for it.

Good luck whatever you decide!

Thanks for your reply :)

Aye well I thought I could just cancel and then keep it, so I havn’t canceled it now.

True, thats what I’ve got to get into my head!

Haha if only she could the it would make it very easy!

I’m an electrician by trade so was looking and doing abit more higher education with a view to get a job away… heart was set on Australia but would like to travel NZ first and see what it’s like.

Thanks!

TRAVEL! relationships come and go and like the person said on the phone, that visa is once in a lifetime, which is what that trip is - a once in a lifetime opportunity to see an amazing place and have the most amazing experience.

Me and 2 friends head to new zealand in 2 months and i cannot wait, we are all going on working holiday visa’s as well. Australia is amazing as well, but i have heard if you like oz, you will love new zealand even more.

Also remember that you only have so long to use your working holiday visa once its granted before you loose it as well. I think that is a year.

and my final bit - its a very long way to fly for 3 weeks just to extend a visa, You might not want to leave and you’ll be spending a lot of money to extend a visa that you’ve just wasted 12 months of by going home and then paying to fly back out again a year later.

Would you regret not using the visa and missing out on travelling?

I would definitely say go travelling! Like a couple of people have said, relationships come and go but the memories and experiences you will get from travelling will stay with you forever! Im going travelling next Summer for over 18 months and nothing will stop me! (Unless i get offered a six figure salary somewhere)

You’ve come to a travel website not a relationship website, so you already know the answers you’re going to get here. At the end of the day, only you know how much you want to work and travel and how much the relationship means to you. As an electrician you probably could get a sponsored job out in NZ in the future (especially since the earthquakes), but you won’t know if you want to commit to that without visiting first. You could always work and save in the UK and then travel in NZ in the future just as a tourist.
