We are currently travelling China and loving it!

We landed in Beijing on 5th Sep and so far visited Datong, Pingyao and now in Xian.

We are off to Chengdu next and then spending a day in Leshan and then off to Emei Shan to spend a night there. After that we have untill 28th Oct to get to Hong Kong.

We want to visit Shanghai for about 4-5 nights which makes things difficult. We want to see the Yuanyang rice terraces and Kunming so it means we have a bit of trek on our hands.

Can anyone reccomend good places to see from Kunming to Shanghai?

We are thinking maybes Chongqing, Wuhan and spending time in south eastern Anhui province and south east Jiangsu province. Also Guilin and Yangshuo popped up but it seems expensive to get to from Kunming.

Any suggestions and advice much appreciated, Thanks!

It may be just me but I didn’t find Shanghai that great - 2 nights was ample but I preferred rural China.

Before you leave Xi’an, have you considered visiting Luoyang for the Shaolin temples? Pretty cool.

Decent places I’ve visited between Kumning and Shanghai are:

-Guilin/Yangshuo
So much to see and do here - including awesome rice terraces. Check if stopping off for a night via Nanning makes the journey easier/cheaper.
Nanning has the Detian waterfalls about 5hrs drive away so if you needed to kill a day, you could do that - I haven’t seen them myself though.

-Hangzhou is really nice and chilled (not far from Shanghai) with a lovely lake that the city is built around. It’s also the place that I’ve seen the highest concentration of incredibly expensive cars in the world. We counted 3 Lamborghinis, 2 Porsches and 4 Lexus’ in 5 minutes.

Hi Lloyd,

If your in Xian now, then take the local train to Huashan.
It’s only 120km to your East, about 1 and half hours on the train.
Easy peasy.
Book into a local hotel for your first night, then early 8:00am start up Mt. Hua.
Take bananas, sweets, chocolate to keep the energy up !
.
Your going to find difficulty in getting long distance trains, that’s for sure, now the Golden week is almost upon us.
From about 28 September to 10 October, is China’s big holiday period, where trains can be really booked out.
I guess, you may have to fly from Xi’an to Shanghai, it’s only about 90 minutes fly time.

I take it you have seen Terracotta army,  Wild Goose pagoda, Drum tower, Bell tower, ????
.
I will have a think on other attractions where you mentioned.
