Hello everyone! :) I decided to do a Gap year, and I’m searching for jobs and internships until I will get sick about it.

Today I was looking for jobs and internships in Australia, but everytime I wanted to apply for one of them, I had to pay for it. Is it just the way it works? Paying to aggencies or to organizations so they can find us a job? I’ve decided to ask you first before I pay for something, because no one wants to wast money withtout being sure it’s the right thing to do.

So tell me: is this normal? And if I pay, will they find me a job/internship?

Thank you so muuuuch :D hugs from europe *

The only agency i joined whilst i was out there was hays, and i didnt have to pay them. They were also really good.

I applied to companies directly though and just sent them an email with my plans.

No it’s not normal.

You don’t need to pay for the privalage of looking for a job.

Some backpacker organisations charge you and some will “guarantee” you a job. At the end of the day, I reckon they are just monopolising on the fact that they know backpackers get poor and get desperate for work!

Just like in the UK/Europe, you can view online job adverts (for free), apply for jobs online (for free), you can give anyone and everyone your CV, apply for jobs from public noticeboards, or in the newspaper…. etc…. just like at home. All for free :)

Try gumtree if you are looking for jobs, or if you are looking for bar work or a job with a specific company check their website or Facebook page for openings. Im moving to melbourne today and applied for 6 jobs while in queensland and heard back from all of them and have 3 interviews set up already!

I work through Hays atm in the UK and I land in Australia December 8th on a WHV and they have set me up with a recruitment meeting the following Thursday.

Maybe try contacting a local branch if you have any, I live in Leeds and they have an office there you could walk in to and query this.

hays.com.au could also work if you try through there

I wouldn’t pay for a job

If you are ever stuck for work when you get there, pop your head into Peter Pans travel (you’ll find them in all the major cities I think…) They always have jobs on offer for backpackers and were incredibly good to deal with based on my experience. The jobs won’t be glamorous; Kitchen porting, selling software in shopping malls, bar work etc but it gave me a welcome wage when I needed it the most. Check out their site. Just a suggestion…
