| Title: Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood |
| Author: Alexandra Fuller |
| Publisher: Picador |
| ISBN: 0330490192 |
Description: Chloe Day writes: "Alexandra (‘Bobo’) Fuller is a first-generation white African, the daughter of two British ex-patriots. This book is the memoir of her childhood in the Southern African states of Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. In it she writes about the life of herself and her family on their farm, of the relationships between them, other settler families, the Africans in their community and the land itself. Fuller speaks of how these countries and their peoples were affected by independence and of the personal sufferings that led to depression and alcoholism in her mother. The writing is excellent and is simultaneously infused with both humour and sadness. Whatever the emotion it is consistently delivered with honesty and the prose lacks the over-romanticism that often lets down books authored by European settlers in Africa." |

| Title: Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town |
| Author: Paul Theroux |
| Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd |
| ISBN: 0140281118 |
Description: Chloe Day writes: "Dark Star Safari is the story of Paul Theroux’s journey overland from Cairo to Cape Town. It’s an impressive piece of writing that in my view certainly justifies its shortlisting for the 2003 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. The author’s journey takes him through a total of ten countries, including Uganda and Malawi where he worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in his youth. As usual, Theroux is very opinionated and whilst I don’t completely agree with all his views (especially on aid to developing countries) he does make some very good points and really forces the reader to think about the situation Africa is in today and the problems the continent faces, how these are different from the problems of the past and the way in which they will shape the future of these countries and their people." |

| Title: I Dreamed of Africa |
| Author: Kuki Gallmann |
| Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd |
| ISBN: 0140144595 |
Description: Chloe Day writes: "I Dreamed of Africa is the memoir of Kuki Gallmann, an Italian who moved to Kenya in 1972, along with her husband and son, to live and work on a cattle ranch at Laikipia on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Gallmann tells the story of the lives of herself and her family in a continent that had fascinated her since her childhood in Europe, and of the use of Ol Ari Nyiro ranch in pioneering conservation in East Africa. Much more than just an interesting account of life in Kenya from an ex-pat’s viewpoint, this is an inspiring and incredibly moving book which conveys well the author’s relationship with and love of this bewitching country. If you’ve never really had the desire to visit Kenya before this writing is guaranteed to give you it, and if you’ve been there already it’s sure to make you long to return. | Title: Himalaya |
| Author: Michael Palin |
| Publisher: Weidenfeld Nicolson Illustrated |
| ISBN: 0297843710 |
Description: In this his most challenging journey, Michael Palin tackles the Himalaya, the greatest mountain range on earth, a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1,800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. Penetrated but never conquered, it remains the world's most majestic natural barrier, a magnificent wilderness that shapes the history and politics of Asia to this day. In a journey rarely, if ever, attempted before, in six months of hard travelling Palin takes on the full length of the Himalaya including the Khyber Pass, the hidden valleys of the Hindu Kush, ancient cities like Peshawar and Lahore, the mighty peaks of K2, Annapurna and Everest, the bleak and barren plateau of Tibet, the gorges of the Yangtze, the tribal lands of the Indo-Burmese border and the vast Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh. Facing altitudes as high as 17,500 feet as well as some of the world's deepest gorges, Palin also passed through political flashpoints like Pakistan's remote north-west frontier, terrorist-torn Kashmir and the mountains of Nagaland, only recently open to visitors. This book, compiled from his diaries, records the pleasure and pain of an extraordinary journey. Photographer Basil Pao captures the sensational beauty of the finest mountain scenery in the world. This is adventure at the very highest level. |

| Title: The End of Elsewhere: Travels Among the Tourists |
| Author: Taras Grescoe |
| Publisher: Serpent's Tail |
| ISBN: 1852428678 |
Description: Jess says: "Taras Grescoe travels from the western tip of Spain to the eastern blip of China. The book's subtitle is 'Travels Among the Tourists': Grescoe deliberately takes the most touristy routes across the landmass, joining a cruise-ship in the Med, travelling between Lonely Planet's top-rated hostels in India, and watching the package-tourists party on Corfu and the sex-tourists prowl Bangkok. The premise is a brilliant one, and Grescoe executes it with loads of humour and style, though I sometimes felt he failed to really engage with his fellow-tourists. However, the conclusions he reaches about the impacts of unscrupulous tourism are important and disturbing. Read this book, and let it change the way you travel". | Title: Half-time |
| Author: Steve Devereaux |
| Publisher: Gringo Latino Books |
| ISBN: 0955051509 |
Description: Half-time includes a myriad of backpacking adventures ranging from the simple problems encountered when travelling on a shoestring budget to some bizarre tales that seem out of place in the diaries of a man who wanted nothing more than to see a bit of the world. Walking into a war zone in Nicaragua; being arrested in a small, isolated village on the Mosquito Coast of the Caribbean; witnessing a disturbing ceremony of witchcraft in South America; all these and many more varied and unexpected experiences become part and parcel of backpacking. This collection of travel tales is intricately connected by the moving, pivotal story of the desperate struggle to recover from a near-fatal car crash. Taking you on a journey through the ‘first half’ of the life of a man from the first generation of backpackers, this autobiography not only illustrates how confronting death often forces one to reflect on life, but also how memories can become the perfect ‘medicine’ to combat the pain, fear and despair of a major trauma. |

| Title: Swahili for the Broken-hearted |
| Author: Peter Moore |
| Publisher: Bantam |
|
ISBN: 0553814524 |
Description: Escaping a broken-heart, the bestselling author of The Wrong Way Home and No Shitting in the Toilet hits the (rather dusty) road to travel from Cape Town to Cairo by any means possible.A week after breaking up with the girl next door - his girlfriend and travelling companion through Central America - Peter Moore heads off to Africa to lose himself for a while. In the grand tradition of 19th-century scoundrels, explorers and romantics, Africa strikes him as the ideal place to find solitude and anonymity in the face of a personal crisis. What follows is Peter's journey from one end of the Dark Continent to the other. Travelling the fabled Cape Town to Cairo route by any means of transport he can blag (or if he must, pay) his way onto, it's an epic trek that sees our intrepid Antipodean experience everything from the southernmost city in Africa to the Pyramids, vast game parks and thundering falls, cosmopolitan cities and tiny villages, as he journeys through the very heart of Africa. And travelling on his own, it's inevitable that Peter falls in with a motley cast of characters and has myriad misadventures: including coming face to face with a wild hyena with very bad breath, crossing the treacherous Sani Pass, the highest in Africa, narrowly escaping a riot by hiding in a coffin shop, saving oil-covered penguins in South Africa, and acting as an extra in a World War II epic, not to mention dodging 20,000 single woman trying to catch the eye of the king of Swaziland during the annual Reed Dance. Oh yes, and then there was the time when he was kicked out of Robert Mugabe's birthday bash at gunpoint. |

| Title: Motorcycle Diaries |
| Author: Ernesto Che Guevara, Ann Wright (Translator) |
| Publisher: Verso Books |
|
ISBN: 1859840663 |
Description: In January 1952, two young men from Buenos Aires set out to explore South America on an ancient Norton motorbike. The journey lasted six months and took them thousands of miles, all the way from Argentina to Venezuela. En route, there was disasters and discoveries, high drama, low comedy, fights, parties and a lot of serious drinking. They met an extraordinary range of people: native indians and copper miners, lepers, police, wanderers and tourists. They became stowaways, firemen and football coaches, and joined in a strike. They sometimes fell in love, and frequently fell off the motorbike. Both of them kept diaries. One of them was a tall and good-looking medical student called Ernest Guevara de la Serna. Using the standard Argentinean nickname, others would sometimes refer to the two companions as Big Che and Little Che. In Ernesto's case, the nickname stuck. Within a decade the whole world would know Che Guevara. This is the story of that remarkable journey, eight years before the Cuban Revolution, in Che's own words, and illustrated with contemporary photographs. For Che, it was a formative experience, and amidst the humour and pathos of the tale, there are examples of his idealism and his solidarity with the poor and the oppressed. But it is far from being the diary of a militant, and sometimes very far from being "politically correct", which may be the reason that the manuscript has only been made available now, a quarter century after Che's death in the Bolivian jungle. Instead, it is a record kept by an exuberant, intelligent and observant 23-year-old, describing what might have been the adventure of a lifetime - had his lifetime not turned into a much greater adventure. |

| Title: On the Road |
| Author: Jack Kerouac, Ann Charters (Introduction) |
| Publisher: Penguin Books |
|
ISBN: 0142437255 |
Description: Sal Paradise is a writer just like Kerouac who decides to 'see America'. He hitches rides, washes dishes, works on farms, sleeps on floors and under the stars, experiencing new flavors of life and meeting different kinds of people he never thought existed. It is a kaleidoscopic journey across this country, not some plastic trip on flying tin cans, staying in gaudy hotels, hobnobbing with phony people and walking through tourist traps in line with the flock. He meets other writers just like himself coming and going 'On The Road' who convey their own experiences and enrich Sal's ever more in the process. The conflict comes in the figure of Dean Moriarty, a hustler and con man who the beatniks first embrace as one of their own, but eventually identify for what he is after patterns begin to emerge in his relationships with his peers. Sal at first sees Dean as a hero, a role model, but slowly grows disillusioned with broken promises, threadbare lies, irresponsible behavior, and eventual deceit and betrayal. The whole story is focused on Sal and Dean, and just as the two go off on a tangent down into Mexico and on into Central America, it seems analogous as to how Sal's vision become blurred and misdirected in following an agenda he mistakenly believes to be his own. This is probably the best book written on the Beat Generation, capturing the essence of the times and the spirit that established what became the underground culture of America. Teens and young adults having trouble articulating their deepest feelings may find that Kerouac did it for them almost a half century ago. |

| Title: The Search for Shangri-La |
| Author: Charles Allen |
| Publisher: Abacus |
|
ISBN: 0349111421 |
Description: The idea of a hidden refuge, a paradise far from the stresses of modern life, has universal appeal. In 1932 the writer James Hilton coined the word 'Shangri-La' to describe such a place, when he gave that name to a hidden valley in the Himalayas in his novel Lost Horizon. In The Search for Shangri-La, a lively and amusing account of journeys in Tibet, acclaimed traveller and writer Charles Allen explores the myth behind the story.Lyssia says: "I read this book when I was in my first year at university, sitting surrounded by obscure maths textbooks. The vivid imagery of the Tibetan lifestyle, landscape and history contrasted so completely with life in Surrey that I instantly made plans for all kinds of exotic travels over the next two years. Allen's descriptions both of the people he encounters and their history is breathtakingly real, including oppression from China and the unique way of life dominated by Tibetan Buddhism. This is a book that draws you into itself and opens a door to understanding a non-Western culture in its incredible richness." |
