Childcare and Care Work
Volunteer work with children
This placement would suit... caring, creative, energetic volunteers who want to make a difference.![]() Volunteers in Romania work in foster homes, day care centres and orphanages in and around the city of Brasov. These centres tend to house up to 12 children. The orphaned children are of all ages from babies to 16 year-olds. With so many orphans, it is impossible for the staff to give each individual the care and attention they need in order to make a significant difference to their development. However, this is why volunteers are so important. They work between four and eight hours each day, giving daily attention to the orphaned children. An important aspect of the work is teaching life skills that parents or guardians would normally, impart - such as washing, cleaning teeth, brushing hair, tying shoes etc. Volunteers also organise activities such as song, dance, drama and sport, and teach some basic English to the slightly older children. The very young children simply need looking after and picking up regularly so that they feel loved.
Accommodation is with local Romanian families in Brasov - known for their warm hospitality; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Romanian family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Romanian delights! ![]() Our users say..."My experience in Romania was life altering. It opened my eyes to the immense deprivation that is so close to home. Working with the orphans was humbling - Overall, a fantastic memory. I have met lifelong friends and have definitely been inspired to travel even more after Uni. Thank you TPA!"- Tiffany Cunningham
