For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

For those looking for an easy introduction into Latin American life, Argentina is perfect. Much of the country is very westernized, with big, modern cities and a distinctly Mediterranean flavor. Despite this, parts of the country also experience extreme poverty, especially in the outskirts of the major towns and cities. The capital, Buenos Aires, is a lively, cultured city with many different museums and galleries, as well as boasting the world’s widest road - the Avenida 9 de Julio. The geography of Argentina is varied and stunning, with tropical waterfalls in the North, and snow-capped mountains and glaciers in the South.
When can I go?

Departures for the Argentina projects are in August and March, and the placements last between four and five months.
Locations

Lattitude's Argentina projects are all urban and based around four main centres

  • Buenos Aires

  • Cordoba

  • Salta

  • Neuquen

Accommodation

Our volunteers live in a small house near the orphanage entrance. This is out of bounds for the children, which allows volunteers some space.
Qualities / Skills

You will not find it difficult settling in to life in Argentina, but there are a few skills you will need before you go. For the caring placements, you will need a real love of children and an ability to work well with them. We also require a good basic level of Spanish (GCSE in the UK or equivalent). If you do not have a formal qualification, we will require proof that you have attended Spanish conversation classes before departure.

This is an institute for some 300 children, in some 17 houses, who are unable to be looked after by their parents. Our volunteers are normally attached to one house, but there is scope for you to work with e.g. children in the handicapped house, where they always need help. Your most important asset will be a positive attitude. The children range from babies to 16 years old. The older girls living in the house do all the housework and look after the children. There are many children from one family as they do not want to split the families up. There is a very strong community atmosphere in the centre and you soon become one of the family! All the children’s clothes are donated. Perhaps you could take some soft toys to give to them. Susana, the host (60) is extremely warm and understanding. All the volunteers who have been there have loved it and don’t want to leave.

To help look after the children. The day starts early by getting the children up, changing them, changing the sheets, having breakfast and taking them outside to play. Lunch is at 11 00. Some children go to school in the afternoon. The others have a nap. In the early evening you might help out with homework, play, or read to the children. It is mostly up to you to find ways in which you can help. Dinner is at 20 00, they are then helped to get changed and put to bed.
