This placement would suit... Adventurous, enthusiastic people with lots of energy and good ideas who really enjoy working with children. A good imagination an advantage, also sports, music art skills. For people who would thoroughly enjoy a genuine rural African culture. ![]() This is a special holiday project which Travellers has set up to give the kids something to do during the holidays. The idea is to keep them entertained and perhaps teach them some skills at the same time. It will be great fun for them and won't cost their parents or grandparents a penny. Our holiday camps take place at eMakhosini, a rural village school in the heart of traditional Zululand in KwaZulu Natal. During the school holidays the children have nothing at all to do due to the rural location of the school. The children love the Holiday Camps - they're kept entertained whilst having fun and learning with the added bonus of having somewhere to go during the school holidays when there's no one at home to look after them. They get a meal and win prizes! The prize for our volunteers is the big grins across all the kids' faces.
Your help will be so greatly appreciated and just seeing the happy faces on those excitable kids, will make you come away feeling like you really have made a difference! Accommodation is situated on one of the farms incorporated into the eMakhosini Opathe Heritage Park game reserve. The farm is approximately 20 km from Ulundi town and shopping trips into town will be arranged at a set time on a weekly basis.
You'll be given a budget for food which will cover all your meals. All you will need is pocket money for extras, such as Cokes, shampoo, travelling around, etc. Project Dates: This project runs for 2 weeks between approximately 30th of June and 11th of July and 8th to 19th December every year. You don't need any qualifications to take part in this project, SO COME TO SOUTH AFRICA AND HAVE FUN WITH THE KIDS!

The cultural exchange that takes places with volunteers from a 1st world community is an amazing opportunity for them to learn about the world outside their village which most of them have never left. The opportunity to engage in conversational English opens the door to a more successful future for them, as most of them were unable to speak English until Travellers started working in the village. (Most of their parents are illiterate and do not speak any language other than Zulu and some are orphans that stay with their grandparents.) Although the emphasis of this camp is to have FUN - your attendance will assist with developing life skills, numeracy, literacy and many other areas of these children’s lives.
Currently accommodation is in the old farm house which has 2 bathrooms, 6 bedrooms which can sleep 4 people each, a large kitchen and social area with a fireplace. Although the garden is fenced and gated you will often find game from the Park roaming around the house. These include kudu, zebra, giraffe and even rhino’s! The reserves game guards live in accommodation within walking distance from the house, so also expect to see game guards on patrol.
