In collaboration with the Chinese teachers of English, you will be teaching conversational English. You will also operate ‘English Corners’, offering enthusiastic students the opportunity to have more informal discussions and to learn about western culture and traditions— which Chinese people are often very interested in. In return, there will be an excellent opportunity for you to practise your Mandarin Chinese in weekly one on one language lessons. Chinese students enjoy team games and competitions. You may have text books to support you in planning lessons, but you can also use role play, songs and word games help students practise the language they have learnt in other lessons. Volunteers in China are regarded as teachers, not students, and having Lattitude volunteers in their school is considered by students to be an exceptional privilege.

This could mean tutoring students who are falling behind or helping teachers to plan lessons. Aside from these 'pure' teaching duties, you will also help in other areas of school life. If you are placed in a boarding school, for example, you will help out in the boarding house during the evenings and sometimes at weekends too. Similarly in day schools, you will be able to take part in activities outside the classroom, such as after-school sports clubs and school trips.

Based in a rural health centre, volunteers aid the ‘Health Officer’ who does almost everything medical-based for their community. The role of the Health Officer is vital within a rural community and is greatly respected; it’s rare to find doctors or nurses at rural health centres, so the demands on a Health Officer’s time are great and you will need to fit in with this. The role does not require any technical or medical experience and you will volunteer under the supervision of the Health Officer (although if you do have experience, that would certainly be welcomed). It is a great opportunity for those interested in a medical based career to Typical activities of a Volunteer Health Worker will include assisting with some of the running of a rural health centre, often looking after a basic pharmacy and providing general administration for patient care, helping to maintain patient records, assisting with activities with babies and under-fives and monthly baby monitoring (weighing) and feeding. You are also likely to have the chance to involve yourself in other community activities; this will often be encouraged and developing links with the community through your role as a Volunteer Health Worker will help you easily make links and friends and more easily begin to experience, explore and understand the culture of a rural area.
