This volunteer experience takes you to the northwestern regions of the Namib Desert, traditionally known as ‘Damaraland’. This harsh tribal wilderness area, runs parallel to the skeleton coast national park, and is home to a small population of desert-adapted elephants. The first week of the project will see you working with the local subsistence farmers, building protective walls around their water points, or constructing new water points for elephants away from homesteads and farms. The following week is spent assisting the staff of EHRA in following, and monitoring the movements of these elephants on patrol, camping wild and living close to the earth, elephants and people.

If you’ve always had a passion for the fastest cat in the world, and you want to get close to them then the Hoedspruit cheetah project is the one for you! Get involved in various aspects of animal rehabilitation at both the Endangered Species Sanctuary and the Big Five Game Reserve. The Hoedspruit cheetah project at the Endangered Species Centre deals with sick, orphaned and breeding cheetah as well as the very endangered king cheetah. Volunteers will have the chance to get involved with the animals rehabilitation, which also entails feeding the animals at least twice a week.

The Kariega Conservation Project is designed to offer volunteers the opportunity to be involved in all conservation related projects on the reserve. In addition, a diverse abundance exploding in a variety of antelope and other species such as giraffe, warthog and cheetah roam the plains which form Amakhala Game Reserve which will provide you with African memories which will last forever. Amakhala’s ethos is one of community support where volunteers get involved in the local Isipho orphanage and contribute by playing games, educating the children and support with the vegetable garden. Volunteers can also contribution through community clean ups and visits to the Amakhala Craft Center.
