If you've qualified, you can work in one of the biggest law firms in South Africa, based in the beautiful city of Cape Town. Placements at the firm are generally tailored according to the area of law that you are interested in to try to ensure that your experience is as fulfilling and beneficial as possible.
You will work in a firm of solicitors, gaining experience in the day-to-day running of a law practice. The work you could be involved in could range from civil and criminal law to conveyancing, probate and property law. The practice we work with in Cape Town is one of the biggest in the country and specialises in the following areas:
- Commercial Agreements
- Corporate Law
- Family Law
- Insolvency Law
- Insurance Law
- Labour and Employment Law
- Personal Injury Law
- Property Law and Conveyancing
- Public Interest Law
- Retirement Fund Law
- Sports Law
- Tax and Estate Planning
This is an excellent law practice of long standing, with a good reputation, and is a great placement. It will give you all-round exposure to life in a South African law practice.
Cape Town is a lovely city with friendly people, and I’ve no doubt you will make friends very quickly. The practice itself is in the centre of town, very conveniently located close to the law courts and Advocates Chambers, the Cape Town Museum, as well as shops, restaurants and the renowned Botanical Gardens – a lovely place to meander during lunchtimes.
As with any law placement, the work you’ll be involved with will vary according to your own abilities and attitude, and to what the company requires from you at the time you’re there, and will be dictated by the practice. Some of your duties may be menial and you may be asked to do some messenger work.
Requirements
You must be either studying Law or be qualified.

Accommodation
The Main Lodge is the centre of all the lodges and is a meeting point for everyone. You can discuss your day in the living room, have a nice chat out on the terrace, go for a swim, watch a movie, etc. Included in the placement cost is a bed in one of the large 8-bed dormitories, so you will be sharing. However, there is an option of choosing a single or double room if you are happy to pay the difference, but we do find that volunteers staying in the larger dormitories tend to make friends easier and be a bit more social. Remember, safety by numbers is always the most responsible way to do things!
