Learning a language is about developing more than just the ability to speak and understand vocabulary and grammar; a nation's culture is expressed in its language and language is a lens through which we see culture. The culture of a particular area might be expressed not just through language but through gastronomy, wine, art, or literature. Similarly, the identity and culture of many places can be expressed through sport; surfing the Basque Coast, sailing the Mediterranean, skiing, snowboarding and snowboarding in the alps, football in Brazil and Argentina. A language study trip is not only the perfect chance to enjoy them, but also a chance to understand what the local sport means. With ESL you can enhance your language course by learning the language alongside a sport or aspect of culture.

You will never have a better opportunity to learn a new language, or to experience the World of work than during a gap year. With ESL you can do just that, and here are two good reasons to do so: Foreign language skills make you more attractive... to everyone, but especially to employers. According to a recent CBI London survey, 95% of businesses say that foreign language skills are “important” and a desirable asset for any job applicant. Following up a language course with an internship means you will not only get a chance to use your new language skills in the context of the workplace, but you will also gain valuable experience in how a foreign business us run.

This means you have a far greater degree of fluency in the language of the country you find yourself in, and therefore are able to contribute more to, and get more out of your volunteer placement.
