Russia - officially known as the Russian Federation - is the largest country in the world and covers more than an eighth of the Earth's inhabited land mass (almost double that of Canada, the next largest country). Russia spans an impressive nine time zones and borders thirteen other countries. It's big. Really, really big!
As a backpacker, Russia is a great destination! To the travel pioneer, its vast expanse and cultural differences make it a great place to do some seriously adventurous travel, but it is also very affordable on a gap year budget. With the famously tricky visa system recently relaxed to allow in more independent travellers, Russia is quickly rising up the ranks and placing highly on many expertly currated lists of up-and-coming backpacker destinations.
Unsurprisingly, a country of this magnitude has far too many "must see destinations" to name here, but if you're after a few quick 'takeaways' you'd do well not not miss out on exploring the historic streets of St Petersburg, making sure you see the 400-year-old mausoleums of Dargavs, and booking in some time for a the trip to the thermal springs in Kamchatka's Nalychevo Valley.
