A Jamaican delicacyMannish water - Are you man enough?by Lara Gordon Mannish water, the name alone conjures up various images and on a recent trip to Jamaica I was asked if I wanted to try this exotic soup. Now me being me and always up for something new I accepted the challenge. I should have known better when most of the Jamaican people I was staying with refused to drink it. So down went the Mannish water and afterwards came the explanation of what it was. Mannish water is a special dish of the Caribbean, and it’s called Mannish water for a reason. Usually said to be "for the man," Mannish water is said to be powerful enough to "make your man as strong as a bull." So my first question was ‘what is it going to do to me?’ - the answer nobody was sure of. The answer to my second question horrified me even more - ‘so what’s in Mannish water that makes it so powerful?’ At this point I was given a lovely description of the inside of a Goat’s head (carefully scooped out of course), a goat’s scrotum and the inside of goat’s feet. I was pretty much ready to heave just thinking about what was bobbing about inside of me. So I went to bed that evening with visions of goats and their various different parts. Waking the next morning I realised to my horror what Mannish water does to women - I was covered in a very itchy rash and feeling very sick. After a process of elimination over the breakfast table we deduced that Mannish water could be the only culprit as I’d eaten everything else before and had no insect bites. So this is a warning to others - only drink Mannish water if you’re ‘Man enough’. And for those of you curious as to the recipe, I’ve included it below. Ingredients Goat head, feet, scrotum water 3 green banana 2 potatoes 1 yam 1 chopped carrot 1 chopped chocho 12 pimento seed 5 stalk escallion 8 sprig of thyme 1 scotch bonnet pepper 5 cloves garlic 1 cup white rum salt and pepper to taste Directions 1.Clean goat head very well. 2.
