‘Meet and greet’ packages
Basically it is a service where you get picked up from the airport and taken to your hostel / hotel, get your first night’s accommodation (or more) - usually in a central location, get a tour / orientation of the city and a whole pile more stuff depending on the guys you book with.
Why?
Picture yourself - you have just been on a plane and in transit lounges for 24 hours, you arrive completely cream crackered and just want a bed and a shower... Voila! Your lift arrives and you are driven to a nice hostel, you get some shut-eye and wake ready for your first day's exploration in the morning.
And a tip...
There are loads of them out there, so like everything, shop around and find the best for you. If you do your maths you will find that you will be paying for most of this stuff anyway and it is probably cheaper to buy them in bulk in a package like this.
Other things some add in to the pack
A mobile phone, mailing forwarding, free beer, ‘finding work’ services, etc.
Great as a present for nervous / solo travellers (especially as it allows you to meet people right away) and will give worried parents / relatives peace of mind. So if you are getting hassles from them ask them to buy you one of these for your first night. Very popular for South East Asia and Australia.
