Papeete is not particularly interesting, but the central market is worth a look. On surrounding islands, you can swim with sharks and stingrays, learn to dive, climb volcanoes, or just laze around on the beach!

On Tahiti itself, there is good surfing, as well as a musuem about Gauguin (is that how you spell it??) who lived in French Polynesia.

Generally, if you like a lot of action, French Polynesia is not really the place to go. If you are content to take in the scenery, or try out loads of watersports, then it is a pretty cool place!
