Gap year placements One thing to consider when planning your gap year is whether to spend all or part of it doing an organised placement. These give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in your chosen country, and (arguably) to experience it more deeply than your bog-standard backpacker. From caring for baboons to coaching football, from learning Spanish to digging for archaeological treasure, there ain’t much you can’t do as a female gapper. You’re bound to find that certain placements attract more men while others attract more women. If you’re worried about being the only female - or about finding yourself in a bloke-free zone - ask the organisation what the usual gender-balance is.
