Volunteer Stuart Edmunds writes...

'I spent four months travelling around i-to-i projects in Australia to escape the cynical attitudes bombarding me at work and at home. After working in jobs I have hated since graduating I decided that it was time to spend some time helping the environment and it had always been my ambition to travel around Australia. It was the dream of escaping the miserable English weather and getting away from civilisation that made me decide to go.

I spent time working in some of the most remote locations on earth and made some of the best friends I have ever had and although sometimes the projects were mentally and physically challenging, I have never felt so proud of myself having got through them. It certainly put a lot of things into perspective back home! I had such a good time I am currently considering going back to do the same early next year!'

i-to-i ventures in Australia are targeted conservation projects lasting from four to 24 weeks. They combine travel, fun and hard work. Guided by an experienced team leader, you will join an international team of volunteers. Working five days on, two days off, you can expect to plant trees, preserve river beds and maintain walking trails.

Projects are active in all six states so you are free to plan your own route around Australia, starting from a ‘gateway’ city of your choice. And you can also take time out between projects for independent travel.

Why the placement needs volunteers
In the last 200 years, since European settlement, Australia has seen the loss of 70 per cent of her native vegetation, including 75 per cent of her rainforests. Loss of species goes hand-in-hand with loss of habitat and 23 per cent of mammals, nine per cent of birds and 16 per cent of amphibians are either already extinct or extremely vulnerable. Australia has 13 areas listed as world heritage sites and more than 500 national parks. Thought of by many as one of the world's last wildernesses Australia is home to a unique and fragile ecosystem that needs our help and protection.

What skills you need
Conservation volunteers will be hands-on people who love the outdoors. You should be in good health, reasonably fit, a good team-player and prepared to take part in some hard physical work. You will need to be prepared to move around the country and stay in various types of accommodation.
